Discover North Sinai
Accommodation in North Sinai
North Sinai offers travelers several distinct themes: the Sinai Heritage Museum in Arish, migratory birds at Zaranik and Bardawil, and the coastal dunes near Rafah. Culture and nature thus shape different aspects of trip planning. If you are planning a hotel stay, first decide which of these interests is most important for your trip.
Culture at the Sinai Heritage Museum
The Sinai Heritage Museum in Arish was founded in 1991. A collection description published in 2025 mentions a covering for the Kaaba bearing the signature of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. It is woven with gold and silver and embroidered with several Quranic verses. The description also lists old copper cooking utensils, a model of a desert well, and clay vessels and bowls. It also mentions Bedouin garments from Sinai in various styles, with embroidery patterns corresponding to the respective tribes. A balance scale used for bartering, a model of a Bedouin tent, and agricultural tools round out the selection.
The collection ranges from religiously decorated textiles to ceramics and metal objects, as well as models and agricultural tools. In this way, it brings together a range of cultural themes and gives Arish a distinctive focus alongside the region’s nature-related attractions.
Migratory birds and coastal dunes
The Zaranik Nature Reserve and the Bardawil salt marsh are among the world’s most important stopover and feeding sites for migratory birds. In autumn, the birds travel from Europe and Asia to Africa. Resting, foraging, and migration routes give this natural attraction a distinct seasonal dimension. Fishing on Lake Bardawil is also one of North Sinai’s tourist activities.
The Al-Ahrash protected area near Rafah offers a different focus: it covers about 6 km², and its coastal dunes reach up to about 60 meters above sea level. In contrast with the migratory bird attractions at Zaranik and Bardawil, the emphasis here is on the terrain and the height of the dunes. The nature-related attractions described here therefore differ both in form and in their connection to the time of year.
Places and finding accommodation
The international coastal road connects Rafah, Arish, and Qantara across North Sinai. This lets you match the cultural and scenic interests of your trip with your choice of search location.
Egypt in a broader context
Egypt as a whole also offers a range of nature and cultural attractions. Egypt has seven sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; Wadi Al-Hitan is the only natural property among them. Its fossils document the evolution of whales into marine mammals. The collection at the Egyptian Museum spans the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. The museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and houses the world’s largest collection of pharaonic antiquities. These examples from across the country add context to North Sinai, whose featured attractions here are the museum collection, migratory birds, and coastal dunes.
