For a stay in Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, you can choose between different focuses: river and mountain landscapes, seasonal nature and winter activities, and local history. If you are looking for a hotel, this distinction can help with your travel planning: some activities depend on trail or weather conditions, while historic buildings offer points of reference for a cultural and historical stay.

Rivers, Lakes and Waterfalls

The Vrbas runs through the municipality of Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje for a length of 35 kilometres. At the foot of Vranica, three lakes lie in the village of Ždrimci; together, they are called Ždrimačka jezera. The Crnodolski Waterfall, also known as Ždrimački Waterfall, is 29 metres high. Sikirski Waterfall is in the municipality, on the stream of the same name, and was formed by fault movements.

Another nature attraction is Ljuti slap in the Desna area. It forms on the slopes of the Pode elevation during heavy rain and after the snowmelt. If you include it in your plans, these weather and meltwater conditions matter more than a fixed date.

Trails and Seasonal Planning

The route to Ždrimački Waterfall follows a paved road through Ždrimci within the municipality, then continues along a two-kilometre gravel road, after which you can proceed on foot. Plan for the gravel section and the walk as well as the paved stretch. The surface may change; check access locally before planning your drive.

The M-16.2 main road between Banja Luka and Mostar crosses the municipality for about 18 kilometres. It is a regional route reference, while the way to the waterfall involves local access on different road surfaces and a walking section. As road conditions may change seasonally, check them before you travel.

In the area around Gornji Vakuf, SRC Raduša offers ski equipment rentals and ski instructors. These services may change from season to season; check what is available during your planned travel dates. A local report from 2021 described hikers from Gornji Vakuf and an enthusiastic mountain biker on Vranica. If you plan to hike or cycle, check the local conditions.

Local History and Culture

The Gafića Tower (Sahat kula) stands in Gornja mahala, not far from Gafića duna and the Gafića Mosque. It dates from around 1610 and has been under state protection since 1950. The Mehmed-beg Stočanin Mosque (Džamija Mehmed-beg Stočanin) is dated to 1592/1593. The town’s development also has its own point of reference: Gornji Vakuf developed from the area around the Džemat Mehmed-beg Stočanin.

The summer huts in Luka have areas for storing dairy products, usually cheese. This adds an insight into the traditional use of the huts to the local history. On 8 June 2024, the children’s choir event “Zlatna harfa 2024” for the parishes of Central Bosnia was held in the parish of the Assumption of Mary in Uskoplje.

During the Festival of Ilahije and Kaside, guided tours of Gornji Vakuf were offered to choirs and soloists during breaks between rehearsals and lunch. If you are considering travelling for the festival, check whether such tours are included in the current programme.

For a fixed travel date, the difference between weather-dependent nature attractions and seasonal offerings is useful to keep in mind: Ljuti slap forms during heavy rain and after the snowmelt, while the services at SRC Raduša may change from season to season. Historical dates such as around 1610 for the Gafića Tower or 1592/1593 for the Mehmed-beg Stočanin Mosque are not subject to the same seasonal conditions.
