Měňany in the Český kras
Accommodation in Měňany
Natural landscape and geology
Měňany lies in the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. The Stříbrný potok stream flows through the cadastral area of Měňany; the Kobyla Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Suchomasty, Měňany and Koněprusy. Two different scales come together here: a stream within a cadastral area and a protected area that spans several cadastral areas. If nature and landscape are guiding your travel decisions, Měňany offers several specific points of interest.
Geological and historical landscape features sit side by side in the Kobyla Nature Reserve. They include a former quarry with an exposure of the Očkov Thrust, visible karst features, and caves of paleontological and archaeological significance. The exposure provides a distinct geological feature. The karst features complement it, while the caves are also of paleontological and archaeological significance. The Kobyla Nature Reserve is also part of the Zlatý kůň Geological Educational Trail. This trail is not suitable for cyclists or visitors with strollers. If you include it in your plans, bear this restriction in mind when choosing your type of excursion.
Spring and memorial tree
At the Měňanská vyvěračka spring, water gradually enters the stream bed along a 250-metre stretch between the spring basin and the Koněprusy–Měňany road. The transition from the spring basin to the stream thus takes place gradually over a distance of 250 metres. The summer oak Dub u měňanského mlýna grows on a pond dam near a former mill above Měňany. It was designated a memorial tree in 1986. A 2009 survey records its age as 260 years, its trunk circumference as 395 centimetres and its height as 22 metres. These figures refer to the measurements taken at the time and may have changed slightly.
Culture in Měňany and the surrounding area
The chapel with a bell tower in Měňany is a local cultural monument dating from 1836. The stone cross in Měňany is also a listed immovable cultural monument. Another chapel, sv. Václava, is in Tobolka, within the municipality of Měňany, and is likewise a listed immovable cultural monument. If you are interested in cultural history, you can distinguish between a chapel in the village, a cross and the chapel in Tobolka. Měňany also holds the traditional Easter rattling custom (Velikonoční řehtání). This custom gives a trip during the Easter season a special occasion; check the specific dates for your chosen year in advance.
The Koněpruské jeskyně caves are among the appealing destinations in the vicinity of Měňany. Their location is useful to bear in mind when planning: the caves are nearby, while the cultural monuments mentioned above are in Měňany and Tobolka. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Měňany, the natural and cultural features described here can help guide your choice of destination.
