Potštejn offers several points of interest for travellers interested in cultural history: the Stations of the Cross leading to the castle, the history of the chateau, religious buildings, a military history collection and the protection of a woodland. The themes therefore range from routes and architecture to art, museum objects and woodland conservation. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your trip.

Castle and Stations of the Cross

The Křížová cesta (Stations of the Cross) leads from Městečko to Potštejn Castle and was established around 1750 by Anna Barbora Harbuval ze Chamaré. Its final station is called Boží hrob and is located in the lower castle courtyard, opposite the Baroque Chapel of St John of Nepomuk. The castle’s fourth entrance gate houses an exhibition on the history of the castle. The Stations of the Cross and the exhibition offer different points of focus: the route leads to a specific final station, while the exhibition explores the history of the castle.

Potštejn Chateau: Building History and Tours

Potštejn Chateau was built in 1749 by Count Jan Ludvík Harbuval Chamaré. It offers regular tours of the interiors as well as entertaining tours in Baroque costumes. The tours have different emphases: one focuses on the interiors, while Baroque costumes are part of the experience on the other. The year 1749 predates the 19th-century remodelling of St Lawrence’s Church.

Church and Meeting House

St Lawrence’s Church in Potštejn was remodelled in the Empire style between 1815 and 1821; its earlier form was Gothic. The church contains an altarpiece of St Lawrence by Antonín Machek, dating from 1819. The painting dates from the remodelling period and adds a work of sacred art with a specific date to the building’s history. The present-day meeting house of the Unity of the Brethren in Potštejn dates from 1899. Your choice of themes can therefore include changes to a church building, a specific work of art and another historic building.

Military Museum and Woodland Conservation

The collection of the Vojenské muzeum Potštejn currently comprises more than 400 exhibits, the vast majority of which are historic originals. The collection may change. With its collection, the museum offers a military history focus distinct from the buildings and route stops. If you are particularly interested in military history and historic objects, this collection provides a separate point of interest for your planning.

Modlivý důl protects a woodland with the original tree-species composition of the forests in the Střední Poorličí area. The focus is on the composition of the tree species. This adds a nature-focused perspective on the conservation of a specific woodland to the cultural and historical themes. If you are interested in landscape conservation, you can consider it as a separate focus.

Plan for Visiting Requirements

The chateau tours are regularly available, but their dates may change. Check the current tour schedule before your visit. The Vojenské muzeum is open to visitors only by prior arrangement via email. For the chateau, it is therefore important to find a suitable tour time; for the museum, you need to arrange your visit in advance. You can take these different requirements into account when planning your trip and hotel stay.
