Rozsochy: Church, Railway and Masopust Traditions
Accommodation in Rozsochy
Rozsochy brings together several points of interest for planning your trip: the late Baroque-influenced Church of St. Bartholomew, a listed railway station outbuilding, the annual Masopust ritual, and the traditional Bartolomějská pouť. There is also the Santini cycling route and a hiking route with the option of returning by train. If you are looking for a hotel in Rozsochy, you can choose where to stay based on whether architectural history, a particular festival date, or travelling by train will shape your visit.
Church and Dated Works of Art
The oldest known written mention of the church in Rozsochy dates from 1285. It underwent extensive Baroque renovation from 1763 onwards. St. Bartholomew’s preserves an older core of the building and features late Baroque architecture typical of religious buildings. An early written mention, older building fabric, and later architectural influences thus stand side by side as distinct layers of history.
Three sandstone works with dates on their plinths stand beside the church: the statue of St. John of Nepomuk bears the year 1766, the statue of the Archangel Michael 1767, and the statue of the Cross 1772. The dates on the plinths distinguish the sculptures chronologically: the two figures of saints are dated to consecutive years, while the statue of the Cross is dated to a later year.
Railway Station and Getting There
Another cultural monument is the outbuilding of Rozsochy railway station. It dates from 1903–1904 and has been preserved in an exceptionally authentic condition. Its surviving features include doors with stained glass, decorative boarded gables, shaped beam ends, and stone corbels. This architectural record of the early 20th century complements the church’s distinct history, with its older building core and extensive Baroque renovation.
Rozsochy railway station is on line 256 between Žďár nad Sázavou, Nové Město na Moravě, and Tišnov; all platforms are step-free. For a specific train journey, check the current timetable. The two pieces of information about the station serve different purposes: the outbuilding is a link to the town’s history, while the route information helps you plan your journey.
Customs and Events
The Ostatková zábava, which includes the burial of Masopust, takes place every year on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The ritual follows established ceremonial roles, including a master of ceremonies, bell-ringers, a military guard, pallbearers, a widow, and a priest. These roles give the event a clear ceremonial structure and distinguish the tasks involved in the custom. At the end of 2025, the Ostatková zábava was added to the list of intangible traditional folk culture assets of the Vysočina Region. If you are planning to travel specifically for this occasion, check the event date for the year in question.
The Bartolomějská pouť is also among the local traditions; in 2026, it was described as a traditional event. A programme description from 2024 mentions a morning Mass at the Church of St. Bartholomew, a craft market, fairground attractions, refreshments, and a fairground market. Vendors at the craft market must make their own crafts or give a practical demonstration of how they are made.
Cycling and Hiking
The Santini cycling route passes through the municipality of Rozsochy. On the Bystřice–Vojetín–Rozsochy hiking route, it is possible to return from Rozsochy to Bystřice by train. The two notes address different planning questions: the cycling route is described as passing through the municipality, while the hiking route offers a return journey by train. You can consider these options according to the type of trip you are planning.
