Kallaste and Kallastõ are connected by documented local history: Kallastõ was merged with Tootsi in 1977. Tootsi is in Võru Municipality, within Haanja Nature Park. The park lies entirely within the Haanja bird and nature areas, which are part of the Natura 2000 network.

History and Local Tradition

A handwritten draft plan of the Vastse Kasaritsa Manor from the mid-19th century lists Kallastõ in its geographical description. A local tradition from Kallastõ tells how Kavadi järv was formed: the lord of Uue-Saaluse is said to have dammed a stream flowing from Vaskna, joining three smaller lakes to form Kavadi järv. This story was recorded in 1999 and remains a local tradition. The geographical description and the story offer two different insights: a historical place reference and a story preserved in the village. The plan points to a place reference from the mid-19th century; 1999, by contrast, marks when the local lake story was recorded.

Planning Kütioru Hiking Trails

The Kütioru hiking trail is intended for hiking and cycling. It is 9.6 kilometres long; allow about four to five hours to complete it. This gives you an approximate time frame for fitting the longer route into your day’s plans. A shorter option is the approximately 2.8-kilometre Kütioru hiking trail. The two lengths give you a concrete comparison when deciding how much distance to plan for.

To find the Kütioru hiking trail: From Võru, follow Road No. 2 (E263) towards Luhamaa, turn off at the Tootsi bus stop, and follow the sign “Kütioru matkarada 3 km”. From the bus stop, the same road continues to the Kütioru Alpine Ski Centre. Road conditions and signage may change; check the signs before your trip.

The short Kütioru hiking trail starts at a car park near the Kütioru Alpine Ski Centre. White trail markers indicate the approximately 2.8-kilometre route. Wet sections can be slippery; take this into account when planning. The markers and the described starting point provide specific guidance for this shorter route.

Cultural Heritage Sites and Winter

Along the Kütioru hiking trail, you can explore former mill sites and other cultural heritage attractions. This combination of hiking and cultural heritage appeals to travellers who are interested not only in the route but also in the history of the places along it.

In winter, the Kütiorg Centre near Kallastõ has seven ski runs and four ski lifts. This adds a seasonal winter sports option to the hiking and cycling activities. If you plan your stay around your preferred activity, the options are clear: hiking and cycling trails on the one hand, and winter sports at the Kütiorg Centre on the other.
