Leirvik combines a central harbour area and cultural attractions with a beach close to the town centre. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you mainly like to explore the waterfront promenade and places in the centre, spend time at the beach, or plan activities in the surrounding area? The wider destination of Stord offers additional trails and outdoor activities. Distinguishing between Leirvik and Stord makes it easier to choose where to stay.

Harbour, Breakwater and Beach

The Leirvik guest harbour is located in the town centre. The waterfront promenade loops around the harbour and leads to the end of the breakwater. The facilities offer electricity and water, as well as a barbecue area or barbecue hut with tables and benches. The harbour and promenade combine a waterside walk with facilities in the central harbour area.

Sponavika offers a different experience: it is a beach and recreation area close to the centre of Leirvik. It has a sandy beach, large lawns, a jetty, a diving board, and barbecue and fire pits. While the harbour area focuses on the promenade and harbour facilities, Sponavika offers a beach and open grassy areas. This distinction can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

On the nearby island of Midtøya, visitors can swim, barbecue, walk around the island and fish. The Leirvik lighthouse is also on Midtøya. From central Leirvik, a short boat ride of about ten minutes takes you to a sheltered quay on the island. The travel time refers to the crossing to the quay; it does not describe a trip to the lighthouse. This makes the island a separate excursion option alongside the attractions in the town centre.

Cultural Attractions in the Centre

Sunnhordlandstunet features permanent exhibitions on fishing, coastal industries and regional textiles. The site includes ten buildings. In the miller’s house, a photo montage illustrates the history of milling and shipbuilding at this location. Together, these different themes offer insights into the region’s economic and everyday history.

Stord Church is centrally located in Leirvik. It was built in 1857 on the site of an older stone church mentioned as early as the 1350s; Stord Church was restored in 1957. The dates refer to different milestones: the mention of the older church, the construction of the later church and its restoration.

Stord Culture Centre is in the centre of Leirvik. It occasionally hosts stage productions, as well as major and local theatre and musical performances; concerts are also held occasionally. Programmes vary, so it is worth checking the dates for your travel period. The sculpture “Storddøra” stands at the end of the breakwater on the approach to Leirvik. It is about a five-minute walk from the town centre.

Trails and Activities in the Wider Destination of Stord

Stord is the regional centre of Sunnhordland and lies halfway between Bergen and Stavanger. On Stord, Ă…dlandsvatnet is a short walk from Leirvik and is suitable for swimming. A six-kilometre trail circles the lake and is suitable for the whole family. Swimming in the lake and walking the full loop are different ways to enjoy the area.

Stord offers a range of trails for other activities: Landåsen has several routes for walking, jogging and cycling. Hystadmarkjo is a coastal trail suitable for fishing and swimming. These options differ from the loop around Ådlandsvatnet and the activities on Midtøya. You can choose the option that suits you based on whether you would prefer to include a circular route, trails for outdoor exercise or a coastal route in your travel plans.

When considering a specific hotel offer, check its stated location in relation to your plans. This helps you match the Leirvik search area with the places and activities that actually matter for your stay.
