Ulvik lies at the innermost end of the Hardangerfjord and is surrounded by steep mountains, green valleys, and orchards. The destination combines nature experiences with insights into local culture and fruit processing. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping in mind the differences between hiking trails, sightseeing, and seasonal offerings.

Hiking between the town centre and mountain landscapes

Ulvik has an extensive network of marked hiking trails through forest and mountain landscapes. Options range from short walks to challenging high-mountain hikes. One specific example is the family-friendly Liavegen/Jobykse: the trail starts in the centre, follows the fruit and cider route, and leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Osafjord. It has a total elevation gain of 300 metres; trail conditions may vary seasonally.

The route can also be combined with a visit to the orchards: the farms along the fruit and cider route are within walking distance of the town centre. The B-Active Centre also offers guided hikes and bus tours, as well as indoor archery. If you prefer to explore independently, you can rent bicycles, kayaks, pedal boats, and rowing boats there for outings in and around Ulvik. Rental options and booking conditions may change.

Fruit and cider route: farms, tours, and tastings

The fruit and cider route connects the farms Ulvik Frukt & Cideri, Syse Gard, and Hardanger Saft- og Siderfabrikk. Tours and product tastings are available for groups by contacting the individual farms. At Hardanger Saft- og Siderfabrikk, tours take visitors through the production facilities and around the farm; they conclude with a tasting of products made there. Apples are used to make, among other things, apple cider, juice, dessert wine, and spirits. The farm also has a restaurant serving traditional Norwegian dishes and desserts.

Another option is Øydve Gardsturisme’s guided tour, “In Granny’s Tearoom.” It takes visitors through the orchards and includes local produce, cake, and coffee; the tour is available by arrangement. If you are planning a farm visit or tasting, contact the relevant farm directly.

Church, school history, and literature

Dedicated in 1858, Ulvik kyrkje stands in the heart of the town centre. Its decor includes traditional rosemaling by local artist Lars Osa, dating from 1923. The church contains, among other things, a copy of the medieval painting “Antemensalet” and other historic Christian works. Visits and tours are available seasonally; check what is open during your travel dates.

At the Ulvik library, the exhibition “The School Story in Ulvik” recreates a classroom with original objects from Bagnstrond School (1910–1961). Access is also seasonal here. The Olav H. Hauge Centre offers a different experience: visitors can see, hear, and touch installations about poetry and literature. A poetry workshop encourages visitors to write their own poems, and groups can book guided tours of the exhibition.

Fjord trips and practical information

A seasonal RIB tour by Hardangerfjord Adventure departs from Ulvik and heads into the Simadalsfjord and Osafjord. A RIB trip from Ulvik may also pass roadless settlements and abandoned farms in the Osafjord; along the way, the guide explains how people used to live by the fjord. Check current departure dates before your trip.

For boaters, Ulvik Guest Harbour, right in the centre, has 12 to 15 berths alongside the quay. There are showers, toilets, and laundry facilities at the café by the quay. Berth availability and operating conditions may change. The fjord, trails, farm visits, and cultural attractions therefore offer a range of ways to choose experiences in Ulvik that suit your travel plans.
