Accommodation in Lauvstad
Torviksætra, the trail to Skåravatnet and the route to Snøhornet each offer something different: a mountain-farm setting, a lake and seasonal use, or a route with specified elevation details. You can plan your trip around the activities that matter to you and arrange your journey accordingly.
Hiking destinations with different highlights
Torviksætra is an old mountain farm for the farms of Torvik and Stigen. It is a popular destination and well suited to families with children. Its connection to the two farms gives the hike its own character; the focus here is on the mountain-farm destination and its history. This sets Torviksætra apart from destinations where a lake, fishing opportunities or elevation details are the main points of reference.
SkĂĄravatnet is a large lake where fishing is possible. The hike there is taken in both summer and winter. The marked trail passes over Hellevassbakken and Varane before continuing through Lisjedalen. Varane is a scenic viewpoint along this route. The lake, fishing opportunities and use in both seasons give you several specific points to consider when deciding what kind of hiking destination you are looking for.
The route to Snøhornet has different details: it is three kilometres long, climbs from 180 to 1,025 metres and is rated moderate. Unlike the seasonal information for the hike to Skåravatnet, these details provide guidance on distance, elevation range and difficulty. You can therefore compare the two routes according to different features when planning your trip.
Getting to the hiking destinations
The route to Torviksætra starts in Volda, from where you take the ferry to Lauvstad and then continue on foot from the ferry terminal. The walk from the ferry terminal to Ulvestad Primary School is about 750 metres. Check the current ferry timetable before setting off so you can factor the crossing into your day’s plans.
A different approach is described for Skåravatnet: from the ferry terminal in Lauvstad, follow Haugevegen to the car park at Ulvestadsætra. The final section is a toll road. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this road section from the ferry and walking route to Torviksætra; these are different travel instructions for different destinations.
Fjord location and accommodation details
Irenegarden is located in Lauvstad, in Volda Municipality, near the confluence of Dalsfjord and Voldsfjord. Irenegarden offers two boats for hire and good fishing spots directly in front of the house.
More things to do in the wider Volda destination
The wider Volda destination also has its own places to visit. Stadionparken in central Volda includes a climbing park, a skate park, a ball court, a dirt park, an outdoor fitness park with equipment, a kangaroo area and a children’s driving track. Tricycles, bicycles and pedal cars can be used on the paved paths; road signs and road markings help children learn the rules of the road. The park therefore offers a different kind of activity from the hiking destinations in Lauvstad.
Hornindalsvatnet is also part of the wider Volda destination. It is considered the deepest lake in Europe, reaching a depth of 514 metres at its deepest point and covering 50.5 square kilometres. There are several swimming spots by the lake; in central Hornindal, there is a bathing platform and a diving tower. This means that, alongside hikes, swimming spots are another option to consider when planning a trip to the wider destination.
