Statland: Coast and Industrial History
Accommodation in Statland
Statland is a coastal settlement on the western side of the Namsfjord. Three aspects are particularly relevant when choosing a destination: the history of timber processing along the watercourse, the preserved buildings at Sjøtrøa, and the coastal setting. Other points of interest include Statland Church, a trail listed for hiking and cross-country skiing, and a municipal service point. This will help you decide whether Statland’s combination of coastal scenery and local history matches your travel interests.
Timber Industry and Use of the Watercourse
The watercourse at Statland had supplied power for timber operations since the 17th century. Statland Sag was taken over and operated by the Ekker family from 1819. Statland’s modern industrial development began in the mid-1850s with the construction of a modern sawmill at Øverfossen. The first circular saw in Namdalen was installed at this sawmill. In 1912, the watercourse was regulated and developed to supply electricity to a sawmill, a planing mill, and a newly built wood-grinding mill. Power stations were built at Storfossen and Lillefoss; a turbine was installed at Statlandsfossen to power grinding machines.
Buildings and Church History
Much of the building stock at Sjøtrøa has been preserved; many of the buildings there were constructed between 1860 and 1930. They include workers’ housing, officials’ housing, and commercial buildings. These buildings are a surviving testament to the industrial activity that once shaped Statland. The local history is thus reflected not only in technical installations but also in building styles for homes and businesses. Statland Church was consecrated by Bishop Finn Wagle on 10 May 1992. Its consecration adds a distinct church-historical dimension to a history shaped by water and timber.
Landscape, Routes, and Getting Around
Statland is connected to Utvorda in Flatanger Municipality via County Road 215. Check road conditions before setting out as part of your travel planning. Statland Brygge has a small boat harbor on the shore at Langvika. The Statland lit trail is listed for hiking and cross-country skiing and is operated by Statland Idrettslag.
The municipal service point in Statland is located at Nerbutikken, Matkroken Statland. It offers local tourist information, a coffee corner, Wi-Fi, digital assistance, and a small library. Check the available services before your trip.
A Separate Look at Namsos
Namsos may also be worth considering as a separate focus for your trip. Namsos is located where the Namsen River flows into the fjord. The Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag is located in the Kulturhuset in Namsos and presents Norwegian contemporary art in a varied exhibition program. The museum also offers an open workshop with activities for adults and children; as the program may change, check the latest information before your visit. The Klompen Pavilion offers a viewpoint overlooking the city of Namsos.
