If you’re looking for a hotel in Varhaug, you can plan your stay around your interests in church sites, historic routes, a walking path or a farm shop. Local attractions offer a range of experiences, from medieval cultural heritage to commemorating a shipwreck and learning about cheese-making.

Church sites and history

Varhaug kyrkje was built in Odland in 1904. It is distinct from Varhaug gamle kyrkjestad, a medieval church site on the Varhaug farm in the municipality of Hå. The church site also includes the Sør-Varhaug farm area, with a large, well-maintained Jær house. Several prehistoric burial mounds near the site are mostly visible in the landscape. Together, these places represent different historical layers: the church dating from 1904, the medieval church site and visible traces of prehistoric times.

Varhaug gamle kyrkjegard is a well-known tourist attraction on Jæren. The historic Kongevegen route near Varhaug gamle kyrkjestad was established by royal order in 1663; Varhaug gamle kyrkjegard is a worthwhile stop along the route. A monument in the cemetery commemorates the sinking of the Ingermanland in 1842 and the sailors buried there. Those interested in cultural history will find both a connection to the history of the route and a maritime memorial here.

Another prehistoric site is Resen: at 45 × 12 metres, this long barrow is the largest burial mound in the area. Its precise dimensions set it apart from the several burial mounds near Varhaug gamle kyrkjestad.

Walking path and recreation by the watercourse

The path along the Brattlandsåna near Varhaug is an easy walking route with a gravel surface, suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Red T-markers show the way in both directions. It is also one of the Norwegian Trekking Association’s local walks. The surface and the markers therefore provide clear points of reference when planning your visit.

There is a disc golf course and a playground along the path. The walking route therefore appeals to different interests than the historic sites around the church sites and Kongevegen. If the playground is important to your plans, check its current status shortly before your visit.

Farm shop and cheese-making at Ystepikene

Ystepikene’s farm shop sells cheese, meat, eggs and potatoes made or grown on the farm, as well as products from other suppliers. Visitors can watch the cheese-making process through a window. In front of the shop and cheese dairy is a terrace with views of the Jærhavet and the open sky. This lets you combine a view of the production process with time on the terrace.

Ystepikene welcomes visitors to the farm. If you want to plan a visit, check in advance when visits are possible. This is especially useful if you want to make seeing the cheese-making process or visiting the farm shop a set part of your trip.
