Rugsund – History and Protected Wooden Buildings
Accommodation in Rugsund
Rugsund is an old trading town on Rugsundøya in Bremanger. Its trading history, protected wooden buildings, church, and harbor offer different ways to shape a stay. When choosing accommodation, consider whether you want to focus mainly on the town’s historic character, trails on the island, or activities on the water. Rugsund offers places to stay; check availability for your travel dates before making firm plans.
Trading History and Townscape
Rugsund’s trading history dates back to the early 17th century, when citizens from Bergen settled here. The trading town was placed under protection by the National Heritage Authority in 1924. Protected wooden buildings are among the distinctive features of this historic town. The dates mark different chapters: the early settlement connects Rugsund with its trading history, while 1924 is the year it was protected. Its history and architectural heritage provide a fitting context for understanding the character of this old trading town.
Church and Interior
Rugsund has had a church since the 14th century. The present-day Rugsund Church building was erected on the mainland in 1837; the two dates therefore refer to the long history of the church and to the current building. Inside, you can see rose painting and wood carvings associated with restoration work by the artist Kinsarvik. The church can be viewed from the outside. If you would like to see the interior, check the opening hours or service times in advance. This lets you plan an exterior visit separately from a possible look at the interior fittings.
Trails, Harbor, and Water Activities
Several marked hiking trails lead from Rugsund to other parts of Rugsundøya. Trail conditions can vary by season, so take the time of year into account when planning. The harbor has guest jetties and service buildings; check which harbor services are currently available before you travel. You can also rent boats in Rugsund. A dive center fills scuba tanks with air. Boat rental and tank filling cater to different interests on the water; check availability with the relevant provider before your trip.
Accommodation and Getting There
The old bakery in the trading town is now used as accommodation; Rugsund also has a small inn. Rugsund can be reached by car via the mainland connection, which opened in 2002. In summer, the trading town has its own café. As this is a seasonal offering, check whether the café will be open on your travel dates.
Trips Around Rugsund
Nearby, Rugsund is considered a good starting point for trips to Mount Hornelen, the Tongane coastal fort, and the Vingen rock carving field. These destinations offer different highlights: mountain scenery, coastal history, and rock art. In Bremanger, the Tongane coastal fort includes bunkers, buildings, and a cannon from the Second World War, and offers views of the coastal landscape. Its freely accessible outdoor grounds can be explored independently along paths with information boards. Vingen is another destination with its own visiting arrangements: it has more than 2,300 rock carvings that are about 7,000 years old. Access to Vingen, including landing by boat and mooring at the quay, is only permitted as part of organized tours with a guide.
