Ulefoss: Locks, Industrial Heritage and Geology
Accommodation in Ulefoss
Ulefoss brings together lock engineering, industrial history, medieval traces and geology. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on the canal system, historic sites or the landscape.
The Ulefoss Locks
The Ulefoss Locks are the first lock system on the Bandak-Norsjø Canal. The system has three chambers and a lift of 10.7 metres. The locks are still opened and closed by hand, and the chambers are built of dressed natural stone. The manual work, construction and dimensions offer several points of interest if you want to look beyond the route and explore how the canal was built.
Opposite the locks is the Iron and Canal Exhibition. It tells the story of the Telemark Canal through photographs, models and historical objects. The specific exhibition content may change.
Industrial History and Cultural Sites
The listed settlement of Øvre Verket consists of workers’ homes associated with Ulefos Jernværk. Today, the houses accommodate museums, exhibitions, shops and workshops. In summer, you can explore the gift shop, exhibitions, galleries and second-hand bookshop. Opening details may change; check them before planning a visit. Throughout the year, Øvre Verket hosts cultural activities such as concerts and talks. Further events are announced on its Facebook page.
The Holla Church ruins, also known as Holla gamle kirke, are the remains of a stone church built around 1100 on Hollahaugen near Ulefoss. The site is part of the Gea Norvegica Geopark. Take the bus to Ulefoss sentrum, then walk about 15 to 20 minutes to the ruins. Check the timetable before your trip.
Ulefos Hovedgaard, an exceptional Empire-style building in Norway, is located near Ulefoss. It was built as a summer residence for the Aall family and completed in 1807. Ulefos Hovedgaard can be reached by boat via the Telemark Canal; this journey depends on seasonal canal operations.
Geology and Cycling Route
The Fensfeltet Geology Exhibition displays rare minerals and rocks from Fensfeltet near Ulefoss. From Holla Hill, you can look out over the area where the Fen volcano once stood. The volcano has eroded, but traces of its former vent are still visible. This brings geology to life both in an exhibition and in the landscape.
The Norsjø Panorama cycling route includes a detour to the Ulefoss Locks and connects industrial history, medieval culture, activities and scenic waterside rest stops. This lets you combine a visit to the locks with a bike ride that explores themes beyond the canal structure itself.
Nome as the Wider Canal Destination
Ulefoss is part of the wider destination of Nome. Six of the Telemark Canal’s eight lock systems are located in Nome. The western section of the canal, Bandakkanalen, runs from Ulefoss to Dalen. The Vrangfoss lock system is also in Nome; it is built directly into the rugged mountain landscape and is easily accessible by car, boat and bicycle. The M/S Telemarken route includes the round trip Norsjø–Ulefoss–Lunde. If you are planning a trip, check the current sailing days and times in advance.
