Lendak offers tangible points of connection with local history and culture: St. Nicholas Church, the Múzeum ľudovej kultúry and the traditional Juliáles festival. There are also nature reserves and trails in the surrounding area. This allows you to explore sacred art, folk architecture and outdoor activities separately and choose the focus of your trip accordingly.

Church and Architectural History

St. Nicholas Church dates from the early 14th century. It houses a Gothic Madonna, also known as the “Lendak Madonna,” dating to around 1420. Also located there is a crowned, crucified Jesus on the cross from the first half of the 13th century, dating to around 1235. These dates point to different periods of sacred art and offer tangible starting points for exploring the history of the place.

The former monastery is also part of the building’s history: after it was sold, it was converted into a manor house. Baron Andrej Horváth-Palocs had the former monastery building extensively remodeled in the Empire style from 1812 to 1814. The monastery, manor house and Empire style describe different aspects of the building’s history—from its earlier use to its later remodeling.

Folk Culture at the Museum

The MĂşzeum Äľudovej kultĂşry is a museum of traditional folk architecture. It preserves the memory, history and traditions of Lendak. Its authentic exhibits illustrate traditional housing, material culture, folk costumes and the way of life of residents in past centuries. The themes thus range from housing and clothing to everyday culture and the way of life of earlier generations.

The museum is open to the public every day throughout the year from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Festivals and Cultural Heritage

The traditional Juliáles festival has been held in Lendak since 2007. It complements the historical themes of the church and museum with a local festival tradition. The preschool folklore group offers another perspective on cultural heritage: children learn Goral songs, dances, well-wishes and proverbs there. They perform at various events. This brings music, dance and linguistic traditions together, without limiting performances to specific venues.

Nature and Cycling Destinations Nearby

The Belianske lúky Nature Reserve lies southeast of Lendak, and the Pálenica Nature Reserve lies to the west. The Belianske lúky educational trail is located along the cycling route between Tatranská Kotlina and Spišská Belá. At its beginning is a wooden shelter with the sign “Šarpanec – odbočka Lendak.”

Near Lendak, the DiviaÄŤia obora wild boar enclosure offers the opportunity to observe wild boars in a safe, fenced area. The Belianske lĂşky educational trail begins right next to it. This means wildlife watching and the educational trail are close together, but remain separate destinations.

The forest road near Altánok na Farskom is used as a cycling route. The Altánok na Farskom rest area has a lockable bicycle rack. For cyclists, these are two practical reference points: the forest road’s use as a cycling route and a place to park bicycles at the rest area.
