Holíč brings together the history of its castle and manufactory, religious buildings and archaeological traces. Gardens, waterside spots and trails are also part of Holíč’s character. If you’re looking for a hotel in Holíč, these different attractions can help you plan your stay.

Castle, Manufactory and Museum

Holíč Castle was built in the mid-13th century as a fortress to protect the so-called Bohemian Road between Hungary and Bohemia. It was declared a national cultural monument in 1970. A visit to the castle also includes the Municipal Museum exhibition. The museum is located in a renovated part of the castle and is devoted mainly to the life and work of the Habsburgs in Holíč. Its collection includes Holíč faience. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The Holíč manufactory began operating in 1743. It was one of the first manufactories in Slovakia and produced faience tableware. The Baroque-classical buildings of the manufactory complex date from the second half of the 18th century, so the start of production and the construction period mark different stages in its history. The Holíč City Gallery is located in part of a former faience manufactory building.

Technical Buildings and Their History

Holíč’s surviving stone windmill dates from the 1880s. The building has a basement and three storeys. You can visit the site independently; a guide can explain it on request. Visiting arrangements may change, so check the options in advance. Another technical monument is the Baroque Granary: construction probably began in 1757, and it began operating in 1761 as the central granary for the imperial estates. It is a national cultural monument.

The historic watermill is privately owned and not open to the public. It retains most of its milling equipment from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its preservation value is therefore quite different from the opportunities to visit the windmill.

Religious Buildings

The Church of St. Martin and its monastery were established to meet the spiritual needs of the ruling couple; the monastery was opened for use in 1756. The Loretánska Chapel stands on the foundations of a 13th-century church and is considered Holíč’s oldest architectural monument. It is currently not open to the public; check its status before your trip. The Orthodox church in Holíč was built between 2013 and 2018 in the classical Orthodox style. It was consecrated on April 28 and 29, 2018.

Megaliths, Gardens and Waterside Spots

The Holíč megaliths come from a prehistoric rondel measuring 60 metres in diameter; 22 cult stones remain. The viewing platform is 12 metres high and offers views of the town, the surrounding area and the panorama of the White Carpathians. The herb garden’s design draws on the tradition of growing kitchen plants and herbs in the castle grounds. The castle gardens also include a water-themed educational trail with information boards.

At Zámocký rybník, grassy areas by the water are available for informal visits, picnics and relaxation. The jetties serve as viewing points from which you can observe the water and Holíč Castle. The pond offers different highlights from the historic buildings: views of the water, the surrounding area and the castle.

Trails and Practical Information

The Maria Theresa Cycle Route starts at Holíč Castle and passes through the Bažantnica area towards Hodonín. The Ing. Vratislav Schaal nature trail starts at Valša, follows the Chvojnica towards the Morava and ends in the gardens of Kátov. Valša is also an access point to the Holíč floodplain forest; near a former channel of the Chvojnica, there is a rest area for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Zámocká Café is located in the Tabačiareň building; check its availability before your visit. The Holíč Tourist Information Centre is in the reconstructed Koniaren building. Both details may be useful when finding your way around town, but they do not replace checking the current visiting arrangements.
