If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Dartmouth, it’s worth first deciding which side of the destination suits your stay. Dartmouth serves as a starting point for High Country fishing; the area also offers historical exhibits, a historic gold battery and recreational activities in Dartmouth. Two details can help shape your plans in different ways: the Splash Pad operates during the warmer months, while the Green’s Creek Historic Battery Walk can be scheduled based on its distance and approximate duration.

Fishing and Recreation

For a trip centred on fishing, Dartmouth offers a clear starting point: the town serves as a base for High Country fishing. The pump track offers a different kind of recreation. It officially opened in January 2024 and gives young people a place to develop their skills in cycling and other wheeled sports.

The Dartmouth Splash Pad was completed and officially opened in March 2025, offering families a place for recreation. The Splash Pad at Dartmouth Splash Pad & Playground operates during the warmer months. If you’re planning to visit this recreation area, time your visit for the warmer months.

History and Engineering

The Dartmouth Dam Information Centre features historical exhibits about the Dartmouth Dam. The centre is next to Goulburn-Murray Water’s Dartmouth office, at the intersection of Horsfall and Dartmouth Roads. The exhibits make the dam a tangible historical subject for travellers interested in its development.

The Green’s Creek Historic Battery was installed in 1884 and is one of the best-preserved sites of its kind and age in Victoria. Its remains include a ten-stamp battery, a horizontal steam engine, two multi-tube boilers and other machinery. The site can be understood both in terms of its age and its preserved technology: as well as the year it was installed, its range of machinery shapes its historical character. There are three historic gold battery sites around Dartmouth, so the gold battery story extends beyond Green’s Creek alone.

Walking Trail, Picnic Area and Lookout

The Green’s Creek Historic Battery Walk in Dartmouth is a Grade 2 walking trail, 4 km long, with an approximate duration of 1.5 hours. At 4 km and about 1.5 hours, you can plan for the walk as a separate outing; check the trail conditions again before setting out.

Entry to the Dartmouth Dam Wall Picnic Area is free; check visitor conditions before travelling. A lookout and viewing area are also located near Dartmouth, beside the Lake Dartmouth wall. These details highlight two different ways to spend time outdoors: the picnic area and the views beside the dam wall.
