Victoria can be experienced in many different ways: on multi-day hikes through rainforest or alpine landscapes, taking in striking coastal formations, and visiting museums that tell the story of the region’s history and cultures. Wine regions and cycling opportunities are also among the travel ideas. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first consider which of these experiences you want to make the focus of your trip.

Hiking trails for different timeframes

The Southern Prom Circuit is a three- to five-day overnight hike through temperate rainforest. It leads to the white-sand beaches and clear waters of Sealers Cove and Waterloo Bay. Its duration and overnight format make this a distinct multi-day trip to plan; the nature experience brings together forest and coast.

The Grampians Peaks Trail is on a different scale: this one-way hike through Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park is designed to take 13 days, or 12 nights. There are 11 hike-in campsites along the route, accessible only on foot. Planning therefore involves not just the landscape, but also the long duration and overnight stays along the way.

The Goldfields Track offers another point of comparison: it is 210 kilometres long and passes through some of central Victoria’s most historic towns and most beautiful forests. You can complete it on foot or by bicycle. While this figure describes the route’s distance, the days and nights for the Grampians Peaks Trail provide a timeframe for a one-way hike. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing offers a different landscape, taking you across alpine ridges and through green river valleys and alpine scenery.

Coast, sea and wildlife

The underwater world and its habitats are the focus of Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park. The park includes biodiverse marine ecosystems with sponge gardens. Snorkelling is possible at Norman Beach, on the southern side of Picnic Bay and in Refuge Cove; diving is also an activity in the Marine National Park. Water conditions can vary.

Along Victoria’s dramatic coastline, the 12 Apostles rise from the Southern Ocean as towering rock formations. Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve offers a very different landscape: it lies within an extinct volcano, where koalas, emus, kangaroos and numerous species of waterbirds live freely. These are two distinct nature experiences—a striking rocky coastline and a reserve with free-roaming wildlife.

Forests, waterfalls and green trails

Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park has numerous high-quality walking trails and hikes, as well as scenic drives. One of its well-known natural features is MacKenzie Falls, which flows year-round. You can experience the park through both walks and a drive through the landscape.

The Forrest Mountain Bike Trails offer a distinct setting for mountain biking: they wind through tall eucalypt forests, dry heathland and dense fern gullies. In the Otways, you can see glow worms at Melba Gully. The trails in Forrest and the nature experience at Melba Gully each offer a different focus, from riding through varied forest landscapes to viewing glow worms.

Cultural heritage and wine regions

At the Diggings area of Sovereign Hill, visitors can pan for real gold using the same techniques miners used in the 1850s. This hands-on experience offers a tangible connection to the gold rush era. At Melbourne Museum, the First Peoples exhibition explores the history, cultures, achievements and survival of First Peoples in south-eastern Australia. It includes more than 600 cultural objects and 38 Victorian languages. Exhibition content may change; check what is currently on display before visiting.

The wine region can also play a part in planning your trip: the Yarra Valley has more than 70 wineries around Healesville and in the hill country of Nillumbik, Hurstbridge and Kangaroo Ground. This offers a different focus from a hiking trip or a museum visit.

Yarra Valley and getting there

The Yarra Valley can be reached from Melbourne via the Lillydale railway line to Lillydale Station; bus routes 683 and 679 also run from Melbourne CBD. Lillydale Station is accessible. Transport details may change, so it’s a good idea to check services before your trip.
