Dolní Přím: Castle History and Forest Nature Trail
Accommodation in Dolní Přím
If you are considering Dolní Přím as a destination for a stay, several clearly distinct themes come together: the history of the castle, monuments in the municipality and a forest nature trail. This lets you assess the destination based on whether you are mainly interested in architecture and local history or also in a forest-focused experience. Dolní Přím lies approximately 10 kilometres west of Hradec Králové, in the direction of Nový Bydžov. The municipality has very good bus connections. Please check the current timetable for your specific journey.
Castle history and cultural use
Dolní Přím Castle was created by extensively converting a Renaissance fortress into a Baroque castle between 1681 and 1714. The Italian architect Carlo Antonio Lurago also contributed to the conversion. The transition from a Renaissance fortress to a Baroque castle provides a central thread in the history of the building. For travellers interested in historic architecture, this development offers a specific point of interest.
During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, a military hospital was housed in the castle, and the building was damaged again. This later military use adds a different chapter to the building’s history than its conversion into a Baroque castle: architectural history and wartime experience belong to different periods here.
Following extensive reconstruction, the castle chapel is used for concerts and other social events. This adds a cultural events context to the historic architecture and its wartime history. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert or social event, check in advance for suitable dates.
Monuments and landscape
The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Dolní Přím is also registered as an immovable cultural monument. The municipality is also home to two monuments with distinct designs. IR 74 is a sandstone obelisk on a pedestal, distinguished by a large relief of the Austrian eagle. Czech and German inscriptions appear on cast-iron plaques. U sv. Aloise, by contrast, is a sandstone cross on a pedestal with black granite plaques bearing inscriptions in Czech and German. The comparison is therefore between an obelisk with an eagle relief and a cross with black plaques. Both monuments bear inscriptions in the same two languages, but their forms and materials differ markedly.
The municipality of Dolní Přím, including its administratively affiliated parts, lies within the “Battlefield of the Battle of Hradec Králové” landscape heritage zone. This landscape designation therefore covers the municipality and its affiliated parts, not just individual buildings or monuments.
Forest nature trail in Bažantnice
The Dolní Přím forest nature trail is in a wooded area on the western edge of Dolní Přím; this woodland is called Bažantnice. The trail has 12 educational stations and 2 play stations. The two types of stations offer different emphases: learning and play are equally part of the trail. This makes it a distinct forest-focused attraction alongside the history of the castle and the village. The destination therefore offers a choice of different themes: the transformation from a Renaissance building into a Baroque castle, distinctive monuments and a forest trail with educational and play stations.
