Hřibiny-Ledská: Hillfort, Mill and Places of Remembrance
Accommodation in Hřibiny-Ledská
The history of Hřibiny-Ledská encompasses archaeological traces, architectural heritage and places of remembrance. This provides a thematic focus for planning your trip: a prehistoric hillfort, a Baroque mill complex and evidence of social change. The traditional Masopust carnival is also part of the town’s annual calendar.
Hillfort and archaeological traces
Hradiště, a wooded promontory, lies between Velká Ledská and Lično. Remains of a hillfort from the Lusatian culture period have been preserved there; it is dated to 1200–900 BC. The plateau, approximately 250 by 150 metres in size, gives an idea of the scale of the site. A double rampart running north to south separated the hillfort from the rest of the ridge.
Another archaeological site is the Čápy area in the cadastral territory of Velká Ledská, where a Bronze Age bronze hoard was found. While Hradiště is associated with the remains of a hillfort, Čápy points to a Bronze Age find. These two places therefore lead to different archaeological themes: the form of a fortified site in one case, and a Bronze Age hoard in the other.
The Baroque water mill Mlýn Podlíska
One architectural highlight is Vodní mlýn Ledská, also known as Mlýn Podlíska. The Baroque water mill stands on the Bělá and has a half-timbered upper storey and a shingle roof. A large courtyard is lined with a row of half-timbered and stone outbuildings. Different construction methods stand side by side: half-timbering features both in the mill’s upper storey and in some of the outbuildings, while other buildings are made of stone.
At house no. 56, the Mlýn Podlíska complex is listed as an immovable cultural monument under number 2240. It comprises the mill, a barn and a residential building; the residential building is privately owned. Mlýn Podlíska is considered, presumably, the most significant cultural monument in Hřibiny-Ledská. Its architectural form and listed status offer two different perspectives: one concerns the appearance of the complex, the other the status of the complex as a whole.
Places of remembrance and chapels
In front of house no. 19 in Hřibiny stands a stone cross erected by local residents after 1848 in memory of the abolition of forced labour. Its purpose marks a different period from the hillfort: the cross commemorates a social change in the 19th century.
The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk lies between Hřibiny and Velká Ledská. The Chapel above Malá Ledská is one of the cultural monuments of Hřibiny-Ledská. Alongside the stone cross and archaeological traces, religious buildings thus emerge as historical points of interest in their own right.
