Libčany combines architectural history with ponds, an educational trail and local traditions. These highlights offer concrete ways to decide whether to choose the town as a travel destination: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and former fortresses, various bodies of water, and seasonal activities and local traditions. This makes it possible to plan a hotel stay around specific interests rather than just a single keyword.

Church and the History of the Fortresses

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an important historic monument in Libčany. It dates back to a Romanesque foundation in the early 13th century and was altered around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Several centuries separate these building phases, which together shape the history of the structure.

Former fortresses are also part of the town’s history. Turyně Fortress once stood on an island in a pond in the centre of town and served as the seat of the Lords of Libčany. A second fortress was built on the site where Libčany Chateau later stood; the elementary school is there today. The fortress fell into ruin around the middle of the 16th century. Later, a single-storey Renaissance chateau was built on its site.

The history of the landscape goes back even further: skeletal graves of the Únětice culture attest to prehistoric settlement near Libčany. The town’s past therefore stretches far back before its medieval buildings.

Ponds and Their Distinctive Features

At 4,000 m², Brigádník Pond is the largest of the ponds in Libčany. Kočár Pond, also known as the outdoor swimming pool, is close to the town centre and covers about 3,300 m². Kočár is therefore smaller than Brigádník; its approximate area is complemented by its central location as a point of reference.

Turyň Pond is on private property and is not open to the public. Another pond in Tovární Park is used mainly for recreation; a wooden footbridge crosses the water. The ponds thus have different features: the size of Brigádník Pond, the location of Kočár, and the bridge at the pond in Tovární Park.

Libušina studánka lies in a forest between Libčany and Hřibsko. Local tradition associates the spring with water believed to have healing properties. The site thus also represents the folklore of the landscape, alongside its architectural history and bodies of water.

Educational Trail and Seasonal Traditions

The “Cesta do minulosti Libčan a Hvozdnic” educational trail starts at Kočár Pond. Its name refers to the history of Libčany and Hvozdnice and gives the trail a historical focus. The pond is also a clear landmark for anyone exploring the educational trail.

When there is enough frost, people of all generations and skill levels use Kočár for ice skating. This winter activity depends on frosty conditions. Regular fish harvests at the pond include the sale of fish and fish specialities. If you would like to plan your trip around one, check the specific event dates in advance.
