Librantice: History, Landscape and Leisure

History and Historic Routes

Librantice is thought to have been founded as part of a hide colonisation in the second half of the 13th century. This should be distinguished from the first written mention, which dates to 1496. The two dates answer different questions: the 13th-century date refers to the presumed time of the settlement’s founding, while 1496 is the date of its written mention. The year 1496 should therefore not be read as the founding date.

Archaeological finds also point to prehistoric settlement in the area. These include a Neolithic stone axe and a fragment of a stone adze. The objects add a much earlier period to the presumed medieval origins of the settlement.

The former Hradecko-Bystřická trade route is also part of the town’s history. It formed Librantice’s northern cadastral boundary and forked in Slatina in two directions: one route led towards Kladsko, the other towards Opočno. The historic route adds a geographical dimension to the timeline.

Landscape and Windmill

The Čičánek Biocenter, with its water area, was established on the former site of the large Čičánek pond. Both details are important to the area’s landscape history: the former pond and the later creation of the biocenter on the same site.

Another historic attraction can be found at the nearby open-air museum in Krňovice. It houses a windmill from Librantice, built according to surviving plans from 1943. The completed structure was presented in 2023. The years mark different stages: 1943 is the year of the plans, and 2023 the presentation of the built windmill.

Events and Leisure

The Slet čarodějů a čarodějnic (Wizards’ and Witches’ Gathering) is considered a traditional local event in Librantice. The 2023 edition included children’s competitions, sausage roasting and a large bonfire. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

Na Vrších Golf Club offers a golf school for children and adults. The club also has a tennis court with a professional coach. The activities are distinct: a golf school for two age groups, on the one hand, and a tennis court with a coach, on the other.
