Licno – Church and Local History
Accommodation in Licno
Licno lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains. When choosing a destination, cultural history and local activities go hand in hand: the Church of the Annunciation (Zvěstování Páně) and Mariánský dvůr form the historic focal points, while walks, a cycling route, and recurring events offer further ways to explore the area.
Parish church with several building phases
Zvěstování Páně is Licno’s parish church and is open to visitors. It was probably built in the Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century. It was remodelled in the Late Gothic style in 1594, then extensively redesigned in the Baroque style between 1777 and 1780. The church and part of its retaining wall are protected as cultural monuments. If you are planning a visit, check the current access arrangements in advance.
Mariánský dvůr as the historic centre of the town
Mariánský dvůr is considered the original centre of Licno. A wooden fortress once stood there; in the first half of the 17th century, it was converted into a stone manor house. Unlike the parish church, whose history is marked by alterations, the focus here is the transition from a wooden fortress to a stone manor house. Today, Mariánský dvůr is used by the municipality.
Walks and cycling routes
The countryside around Licno invites you to go for walks. Cycling route 4167 runs through the town from Třebešov to Očelice and is 18 km long. A description published in 2021 also mentions an orange walking route through “Pekelice,” which is 4.8 km long. The route is measured from the Sokolovna in Licno. The two routes thus differ in activity and stated length: 18 km for the cycling route and 4.8 km for the orange walking route. Before setting out, check the current cycling-route signs and route; also confirm the walking route locally before following it.
Events throughout the year
Recurring events include Ličenské kácení máje, a public spring celebration. The 2024 event featured a bonfire, grilled sausages and drinks, a raffle for a May crown, and a children’s programme. Ličenský Braňáček is also a recurring local competition. Its fifth edition was announced for 2024; the event took place at the sports complex. The programme thus ranges from a public spring celebration with community activities to a local competition.
Other recurring events take place throughout the year: the Masopustní průvod in February, the Velikonoční pochod at Easter, Ličenské kolečko in May, Noc kostelů in June, Posvícení in August, and an Adventní koncert in December. The listed events thus span the period from February to Advent. If you are planning your trip around a particular celebration, check the date and programme in advance.
