Obědovice: Fortified Site, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Obědovice
For planning your trip, Obědovice can be considered through several distinct themes: the fortified site combines archaeological significance with specific structural features; other historical traces, the flat landscape, recreational areas and a cycling route round out the picture of the area. This lets you decide whether you are more interested in historic sites, the development of cultural life, or the landscape and cycling. Each theme offers its own way to explore the area.
The Obědovice fortified site
In the archaeological register, updated on June 9, 2023, the Obědovice fortified site is listed as a significant site in category ÚAN I. Its dating ranges from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. The site therefore spans several historical periods, and its spatial layout can be described using specific measurements.
The fortified site is approximately oval and measures 23 × 19 metres. The surrounding body of water is about 106 × 75 metres. The comparison highlights the difference in scale: the site is compact, while the body of water is considerably larger. The upper area lies around four metres above the water level. There you will find a Neoclassical statue of St. Lawrence, a sandstone memorial to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars, and a brick bell tower. The combination of elevation and water sets the spatial scene, while the statue, memorial and bell tower each distinguish the upper area in a different way.
A 14-metre-long land bridge leads from the surrounding terrain to the fortified site. Sandstone steps on its eastern side are set into the eastern slope. This gives a clear sequence from the surrounding terrain, across the land bridge, to the eastern slope. For orientation, the information about the land bridge and the steps should be distinguished: the 14 metres refers to the land connection, while the steps are described by their position in the eastern slope.
Historical traces and cultural connections
A fortress mound remains in the middle of a pond, a remnant of a former marshland fortress, and it is gradually getting smaller. While the fortified site is characterised by its dimensions and surviving structural elements, this historical trace is defined by the shrinking mound in the pond. The two points of interest therefore differ in form and in how their historical remains are described.
The local theatre group is another cultural connection. A municipal development programme adopted in 2021 noted that it had remained active since its revival in 2004. The 2004 revival and the activity recorded in 2021 place the group in a much later period than the archaeological site, which dates from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. The archaeological traces and this more recent cultural reference thus complement each other in the history of Obědovice.
Landscape and cycling
Obědovice lies in a fertile, flat landscape. Two former sand extraction sites are now used for recreation. These features offer a different perspective from the archaeological and historical sites, focusing instead on the landscape and recreational use. If you would like to include a focus on the landscape alongside cultural history during your trip, these two areas are specific local points of interest.
Cycling route No. 4199 passes through Obědovice. You can consider the route and the landscape as two distinct factors when planning activities: the route identifies the cycle path through the area, while the flat landscape describes its surroundings. This can help you decide whether historic sites, recreational areas or cycling are most important for your trip.
