Burany: Janatův Mill, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Burany
Janatův Mill in Buřany is an exceptionally well-preserved example of timbered folk architecture and also a point on the KRNAP route “Journey Through Crafts.” The complex is situated in an enclosed valley of the Františkovský potok between the settlements of Františkov and Buřany in the Krkonoše highlands. It is one of the national cultural monuments of the Liberec Region. This brings tangible cultural heritage and a named route together in one place—a useful reference when planning a stay in Burany.
Cultural Monument and Mill Technology
The mill preserves a complete set of milling equipment, including French millstones dating from 1767 and a fully functional bread oven. The date refers to the millstones; the bread oven is another example of the preserved fittings. The site thus brings together timber construction and specific technical components.
Marked Trails near Buřany
The KRNAP route “Journey Through Crafts” runs from the Stráž viewpoint via Janatův Mlýn Buřany to the Stromkovická Chapel. Access to Janatův Mlýn first follows marked cycle route No. 4174 and then continues along paths through meadows and forest. Check the signs and trail surfaces on site. This lets you include the section beyond the cycle route in your plans, rather than assuming the entire approach is a cycle route.
Another marked route starts in Buřany: the green-marked trail climbs gently to Mount Hejlov. From there, you can continue the loop along the green and yellow trails toward Františkov; it then follows the road back to Buřany. Trail conditions may vary by season. The route layout is what matters when choosing between them: “Journey Through Crafts” links the viewpoint, mill and chapel in sequence, while the Hejlov option is described as a loop back to Buřany. You can choose according to the route you prefer.
Horseback Rides and Reasons to Visit
If you are considering a guided horseback ride, rides for one to three riders are available at Kašparka riding station in Buřany. Confirm availability before travelling.
For a visit to Janatův Mill, distinguish between public event days and tours arranged separately. Events held during the year when the mill is usually open to the public include Dřevosochání and Kovosochání na Háskově, Adventní pečení perníčků, and Dny lidové architektury. Janatův Mill is also usually open during Františkovské dřevosochání. Exact dates and access arrangements may change, so check the current event dates before travelling. Tours can also be arranged directly with the owner for another date; coordinate your visit with him in advance.
