Discover Hrubá Skála: Rock City and Castle History
Accommodation in Hrubá Skála
Hrubá Skála offers two distinct interests to help plan your trip: the rocky landscape and its trails, and the castle’s architectural and cultural history. If you are looking for hotels for your stay, these highlights can help you tailor your trip to your interests.
Rock City and Trails
Hruboskalsko, also known to climbers as “Skalák,” is a nature reserve within the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. It was designated a nature reserve in 1998. This sandstone area includes numerous caves, rock tunnels and rock gates, as well as other characteristic small landforms. The landscape can therefore be described through more than a single viewpoint: caves, tunnels and gates refer to different features that shape the area.
The ridge trail through Hruboskalsko Rock City follows a section of the Golden Trail in the Bohemian Paradise. The area’s climbing history offers a different perspective: historically, Hruboskalsko was one of the most frequently used climbing areas in Bohemia.
Castle and History
The castle’s history includes two clearly distinct building phases. In the mid-14th century, Hynek of Valdštejn had Hrubá Skála Castle built. At the end of the 16th century, it was converted into a Renaissance château. Those interested in architectural history can consider this sequence, from its medieval origins to its later transformation, as a separate highlight.
Today, the castle operates as a hotel and is only partly accessible. The courtyard and observation tower are open to visitors. Accommodation and limited visitor access therefore coexist at this site; the hotel’s operation does not mean that the entire castle is accessible. For current planning, it is advisable to check information about trail conditions and access to the castle, as both may change.
Church, Reliefs and Viewpoint
The Church of St. Joseph adds its own architectural accent. It stands by the bridge on the square in front of Hrubá Skála Castle and was built in 1812 in a simple Neoclassical style. The church can thus be compared with the castle’s history in terms of both period and style: here, an early 19th-century building stands alongside the history of the castle and its later conversion into a Renaissance château.
Adamovo lože, also known as Jeskyně milenců, contains rock reliefs depicting three Adams: the biblical Adam, the progenitor of the lineage and Adam František. The reliefs are not very clearly visible today, however.
The Mariánská vyhlídka viewpoint offers a typical view of Hrubá Skála Castle and the Rock City. This provides different perspectives for planning a trip: the ridge trail runs through the Rock City and follows a section of the Golden Trail, while Mariánská vyhlídka looks out over the castle and the Rock City. The castle’s architectural history adds the story of its development over time to these landscape perspectives.
