Marenice: Architecture and Protected Landscapes
Accommodation in Marenice
Mařenice offers two distinct themes for planning a trip: historic architecture and protected landscapes. Cultural sites include churches, chapels, traditional timber-framed houses and rural buildings with half-timbered upper storeys. Natural areas include peat bogs, wet meadows, forests and rock formations. If you are looking for a hotel in Marenice, these distinctions can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: religious architecture, traditional building styles, or nature and hiking.
Protected Landscapes
Mařenice lies in the heart of the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. It was designated in 1976 and covers about 270 km². For comparison, the nearby Jezevčí vrch National Nature Reserve was designated in 1967, covers 80 hectares and spans elevations from 420 to 665 metres. This illustrates the difference in scale between a large protected landscape area and a much smaller nature reserve.
The Brazilka Natural Monument lies within the municipality and features heathland, dry and wet meadows, small peat bogs and wetlands. The Luž Nature Reserve is also within the municipality. It covers 25.83 hectares and spans elevations from 645 to 793 metres. On both sides of the Czech-German border, the area protects mixed forests, rock formations, frost cliffs and block streams. The landscape themes therefore include open meadows and wetlands as well as forests and rock formations.
Rašeliniště Mařeničky is located nearby. This area includes bog birch woodland, peat bogs, small cranberry, round-leaved sundew, wet meadows and reed beds. It is also a potential bird nesting site. Peat bogs and reed beds offer a different focus from the forests and rocks of the Luž Nature Reserve.
Hiking and Nature Trail
The Obnova mokřadů na Brazilce nature trail is 0.75 km long and runs along the edge of a peat meadow within the Brazilka Natural Monument. Four stops with information boards in Czech and German accompany the route. The trail therefore draws attention to the wetlands and their landscape.
The European long-distance trail E3 also passes through the Mařenice area. This allows you to compare a short themed trail with a long-distance route when planning a hike. Check the E3 route before travelling.
Architectural History and Religious Art
The Church of St Mary Magdalene was built between 1699 and 1714. The master builder was Octavio Broggio from Litoměřice. The Baroque church underwent extensive reconstruction after 1989. It was saved and reopened on 27 July 1991. The chapel on Kalvárie Hill was built in 1681 and restored in 2010. These construction and restoration dates show different stages in the history of religious architecture.
Historic architectural styles shape the area beyond its churches and chapels: traditional timber-framed houses and rural buildings with half-timbered upper storeys have been preserved. The Baroque Sousoší Ukřižování was created between 1831 and 1833 and stands at the road bridge over the Svitávka. It connects the history of religious art with a specific named location in the area.
A section of the historic route between Kunratice, Mařenice and Krompach is lined with crosses, plague shrines dating from the late 17th century, and two religious reliefs carved into a rock face. Together with the church, chapel and Baroque Sousoší Ukřižování, this route offers another way to explore the area's religious art and history.
