Several travel-planning themes come together in Stružnice: the Ploučnice, an annual whitewater slalom, protected pond and river landscapes, and traces of history. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up different priorities: a specific sporting event, nature, or local history. Stružnice is a good starting point for exploring the natural and cultural features of North Bohemia. You can plan around an event date or focus on the area’s nature and history.

Whitewater on the Ploučnice

The Stružnická Peřej is held annually as a traditional whitewater slalom race at the rapids by the mill on the Ploučnice. Its annual recurrence does not tell you the specific date; check it in advance. A 2022 description of the Stružnická Peřej mentions calm water and rapids of difficulty WW 1–2. River works can change the character of the course. The race date and the described course conditions are therefore two separate points to consider in your planning.

Ponds, protected areas and a tree

The Stružnické rybníky are a Natura 2000 site with shallow ponds heavily overgrown with aquatic plants. The wetland and aquatic habitats are home primarily to a population of fire-bellied toads (Bombina bombina). The Dolní Ploučnice protected area extends across Stružnice and Jezvé and serves to protect the fire-bellied toad. The area contains fragments of alluvial forests, including streamside forests, ash-alder alluvial forests and wet alder forests.

The fire-bellied toad is the shared species of interest when comparing the nature sites: the Stružnické rybníky focus on shallow, overgrown ponds, while Dolní Ploučnice is a protected area spanning Stružnice and Jezvé with fragments of alluvial forest. The Lípa u Stružnice is a distinct natural feature: it is a protected individual tree, first designated on 9 December 2011.

Historical traces

Stružnice was first mentioned in written sources in 1281, in the title of the nobleman Záviš of Stružnice. Historically, there were three estates along the Ploučnice in Stružnice, known as the Upper, Middle and Lower Estates. Prominent earthworks and two Gothic cellars survive from the former water castle. The history of the village thus runs from its first written mention through the names of the estates to the surviving castle remains.

The remains of the water castle lie entirely outside marked hiking trails. Before setting out, check trail conditions and take the location into account when navigating.

Cycling route and railway

Cycling route No. 211 runs through Stružnice. The railway line from Benešov nad Ploučnicí to Česká Lípa also passes through the village. These route details help with orientation; check the timetable for specific train connections and travel times. You can thus consider the cycling route and railway line as separate route options in your travel planning.
