Studenec brings together textile history, architecture and nature with recurring local events. You can plan your trip around your interests and the time of your visit.

Landscape and Nature

Studenec and Zálesní Lhota are foothill villages on the slopes of Stráž. The 630 m-high melaphyre hill lies in the foothills of the Giant Mountains. Another geological feature is the Studenecký lom quarry, an important geological site.

On the school grounds in the centre of the village, a short but comprehensive educational trail with an arboretum introduces visitors to the local living and non-living natural environment. While the quarry is classified as a geological site, the trail offers a broader introduction to natural history.

Architecture and Textile History

The Neo-Romanesque Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1866–1868. A pseudo-Renaissance chateau dating from 1883 stands right next to it and is currently unused. The two buildings represent different architectural styles and phases of construction in the 19th century.

Traditional timber-framed houses have been preserved in Dolení konec. They add another building style to the local architectural history. Studenec’s nickname, “Village of Weavers”, also reflects the history of the town: domestic textile production in the 19th century earned it this name.

The Fejfar & Mládek weaving mill was founded in 1911 and grew into one of the most important textile companies in pre-war Czechoslovakia. Thus, the nickname refers to domestic production in the 19th century, while the company’s history highlights later industrial development.

Sport and Accommodation

In winter, a groomed 1 km cross-country ski trail with evening lighting runs right next to the Sokolovna in Studenec. It is a short route, so check current conditions before using it. Sports fields and facilities around the Sokolovna are also open to the public.

Events Throughout the Year

Posvícenský koláč is a cross-country race held below Strážník as part of Studenec’s harvest festival in mid-September. It has been held nearly fifty times and attracts hundreds of participants every year. The race combines a specific sporting activity with a recurring local festival.

Studenecké míle is a recurring gathering of historic motor vehicles held on the last Saturday in May. Participants drive a route through the Podkrkonoší region and the Giant Mountains. Dates and route details may vary.

The pilgrimage festival in Studenec is celebrated in late June. The sports club’s footballers traditionally organise the sports programme and an evening entertainment event; dates and programme may vary. The Studenec Volunteer Fire Brigade Association also organises the annual Hasičský bál fire brigade ball.

Obecní polévka is a traditional local event. At the 2023 edition, visitors could enjoy traditional village soup, Krkonošské sýkory, mulled wine and other food, as well as buy local craft products. The food and goods on offer may vary from one edition to another. If you are planning your trip around an event, check its date and programme in advance.
