Zahrádky: Discover nature and history
Accommodation in Zahrádky
Zahrádky offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: nature around Peklo and Novozámecký Pond, as well as buildings and landmarks from the area’s history. Hiking and cycling trails are also part of the picture. Which of these aspects interests you most can help shape your stay.
Nature between valley and pond
Peklo is a geologically valuable, gorge-like valley of the Robečský potok in sandstone. This habitat is important for rare and endangered plant and animal species, including a large population of spring snowflakes. The focus here is a remarkable valley, its geology, and its plant and animal life.
Novozámecký Pond offers a different natural attraction. This national nature reserve is associated with rare bird species and a unique drainage channel cut through the rocks. The pond was created during the time of Charles IV. A bird-watching station and an observation boardwalk were built there in 2013. Geology and spring snowflakes on one hand, birds and the pond’s history on the other: these offer different ways to explore the area’s natural environment.
Zahrádky lies along several hiking and cycling trails. If you are planning your trip with this in mind, check trail conditions in advance. This keeps your route planning grounded in the conditions on the trails, rather than based solely on the area’s natural attractions.
Church, monument and architectural history
The complex of St. Barbara’s Church includes walls, a cemetery, a bell tower, a staircase and statues. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. The church is also the only remaining part of the village of Mnichov, which was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. This site brings together a preserved church complex and the memory of a vanished village.
Another historic landmark is the statue of Saint Starost, dating from 1705. It stands between Jestřebí and Zahrádky. Zahrádky Chateau marks a different turning point: it burned down in January 2003. The statue and the chateau thus point to different chapters of regional history, rather than telling the same historical story.
The area’s architectural history also includes numerous examples of traditional half-timbered architecture in Zahrádky. This widely represented building style complements the individual landmarks, offering a glimpse of a broader local architectural tradition. Visitors interested in architecture can distinguish between a protected church complex, individual historic landmarks and half-timbered buildings.
Highlights for your stay
These distinctions can help you choose a focus for your trip: you might concentrate on the geology and rare species of Peklo, the birds and history of Novozámecký Pond, or the area’s architectural and local history. If you would like to include a hike or bike ride, also take the local trails into account and check their conditions.
