Kunčina: Churches, Baroque Monuments and Trails
Accommodation in Kunčina
Kunčina and Nová Ves offer different starting points for a trip: religious buildings and Baroque art sit alongside an extensive network of educational hiking trails, a lookout tower and a geological site. The sights are easy to distinguish by their architectural forms, dates and connections to the landscape.
Churches and Baroque Art in Kunčina and Nová Ves
The Church of St George in Kunčina is a single-nave building. Its architectural features include a Renaissance barrel vault, a wooden gallery and a late Gothic portal in the tower. It also has details from different periods: a late Renaissance relief of St George dating from the late 16th century and a Rococo Stations of the Cross. The style descriptions therefore refer to different parts and furnishings of the church.
In front of the Church of St George stands a Baroque sculptural group commemorating the plague epidemic of 1715 and other misfortunes that affected Kunčina and Nová Ves. Twelve statues of saints stand on a terrace enclosed by a balustrade; four more statues of saints stand on columns. The balustrade with its Baroque statues is listed as an immovable cultural monument. The Calvary group by the balustrade is also listed as an immovable cultural monument.
In Nová Ves, the Church of St Roch dates from 1857. A stone Calvary group dating from 1862 stands in front of the church. The main altar contains an early Baroque painting of St Roch and St Sebastian from the second half of the 17th century. The dates refer to different objects: the church and the group in front of it belong to the 19th century, while the altarpiece is considerably older.
Educational Hiking Trails and Destinations in the Area
The Hřebečské důlní stezky form a 70-kilometre network of educational hiking trails suitable for walkers and cyclists. The described infrastructure includes 22 educational stations, 40 signposts, eight starting points and six rest areas. The multiple starting points help you plan your route through the network; the educational stations and signposts are other features of the trails.
Destinations along the Hřebečské důlní stezky include the Strážný vrch lookout tower, tourist shelters on Mladějovský vrch and at U vysílače, and several mines in the area. The educational trails therefore feature both viewpoints and mining-related destinations. Trail conditions may change; check them before your trip.
A 2025 access note describes the easiest route to the Strážný vrch lookout tower as a 2.5-kilometre walk from the Kunčina, Nová Ves, točna bus stop via the Hřebečské důlní stezky. If you plan to follow this specific route description, confirm it locally in advance. The freely accessible lookout tower is in the forest. In good visibility, the view reaches as far as Králický Sněžník; other named sights include Moravská Třebová and the Pastýřka lookout tower, the lookout tower on Lázka, Lanškroun, and Suchý vrch and Buková hora.
Forest Landscape and Geological Site
The Pod skálou geological site is accessible from the road via a walkable tourist trail and lies more than 250 metres from the road. Trail conditions may change seasonally; check them before your visit. The site has natural populations of European yew in beech forests. Exposed rock outcrops also support a rich variety of rare thermophilous plants.
The lookout tower and Pod skálou offer two different landscape experiences: from the tower, the view extends across the surrounding regions and their named ridges; at Pod skálou, the site is shaped by rock outcrops, beech forests and the described plant populations. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a viewpoint and a geological site without treating their routes or conditions as the same.
