Discover Mrákotín: Geology, Nature and History
Accommodation in Mrákotín
Mrákotín lies in a gentle valley between Hlinsko and Skuteč. The Mrákotínský potok stream flows through the municipality, rising in the Ranský Woods. Geology, local history and sacred architecture offer different ways to explore the village and its surroundings.
Geology in the National Geopark
The Mrákotín geological site lies in the eastern part of the Železné hory National Geopark. It comprises several outcrops southwest of the municipality, among wooded areas and in fields in the stretch between the municipality and a telecommunications transmitter. The rock outcrops are small, but there is plenty of rock debris. The rocks belong to the so-called Mrákotín Formation of the Hlinecko Zone.
The graptolite fauna also makes the site noteworthy for anyone interested in Earth’s history and palaeontology: it enables precise dating to the Silurian, more specifically the Llandovery. So this is not just about the geological form of the outcrops, but also about dating the rocks.
Valley, Stream and Finding Your Way Around
The village’s setting in a gentle valley between Hlinsko and Skuteč, and the stream that flows through Mrákotín, give it a distinct landscape. The Mrákotínský potok rises in the Ranský Woods.
Two information boards were installed in the centre, on Mrákotín village square, as part of the Železné hory – GVO project. They are part of the local information provision associated with the project. The Mrákotín municipal library offers free internet access during lending hours. If you need this service, check the lending hours before your visit.
History and Sacred Architecture
The earliest surviving written mention of Mrákotín dates from 1456. Another dated record is the “Obnovená kniha rychty Mrákotínské”, preserved in the State Archives in Zámrsk. The work bears the year 1695 and is also known as a “gruntovnice” (land register). These two dates offer insight into different historical records: an early written mention of the village and a later-dated archival work.
The Chapel of Saint Isidore is dedicated to Saint Isidore of Madrid, patron saint of farmers and a good harvest. It was solemnly consecrated on 20 September 2014. From Mrákotín, access to the chapel is in the direction of Oldřetice and then along a field path. Path conditions can change, so check them before your visit. Mrákotín’s bell tower was renovated in 2006.
Event and Practical Information
The Country den has been held five times on the sports ground in Mrákotín. At one edition, the extensive programme included music, dancing and competitions for children and adults; programme items may vary from one edition to another. If a future event is important to your trip, check the dates before planning.
The chapel and written records offer different ways to explore local history. You can shape your stay around whichever of these aspects interests you most.
