Radkov lies on the Třebůvka River. The village’s history includes a fortified small town dating from the 13th century, traces of medieval fortifications, and accounts of milling and agriculture. Radkovské hradisko is located south of Radkov, in the cadastral area of Gruna. Two cycling routes offer different options for planning a trip: one passes through Radkov between Moravská Třebová and Městečko Trnávka, while the other runs from Hradisko through several other named places. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether to focus on the history of the village, its location by the river, or one of the routes described.

Radkovské hradisko and the medieval fortifications

Radkovské hradisko is an important archaeological site dating from the Middle Ages and the High Middle Ages. It is located in the cadastral area of Gruna, south of Radkov, and is classified as a fortification, fortress, and hilltop settlement. Radkov itself was founded in the second half of the 13th century as a fortified small town with a small castle.

Hradisko is over 200 m long and 70 m wide. Its outer bailey was protected by a 60 m long, 280 cm thick curtain wall. A ditch cut into the rock, part of the fortified settlement, is also visible in the terrain; it is up to 30 m wide. The measurements are easy to compare: the site extends for more than 200 m, while the curtain wall is 60 m long; the ditch reaches a width of up to 30 m. Together, these details give a concrete sense of the scale of the site and its fortifications.

Village traces and the history of the mill

Radkov has original farmsteads and farmhouses in varying states of preservation. Surviving bell towers are also recorded in Radkov and neighboring Rozstání. These historic traces complement the medieval fortifications with glimpses of rural village life.

The Dolní Mill, Fleckův mlýn, was first mentioned in 1680 under the name “Rottendorf mühle – Radkovský mlýn.” In 1835, the mill consisted of a masonry building with two wheels. The two wheels were powered by a millrace on the right bank of the Třebůvka. These details offer two distinct historical perspectives: 1680 marks the first mention under that name, while the 1835 description records the building, wheels, and power source. Together, they give a concrete picture of the mill as described in 1835.

Cycling routes and choosing a route

Marked cycle route No. 506 runs from Moravská Třebová to Městečko Trnávka, passing through Linhartice, Radkov, and Rozstání. Cycle route No. 4043 runs from Radkovské hradisko through Gruna and Žipotín to Nad Svojanovem. The difference is clear for navigation: No. 506 connects two named endpoints and passes through Radkov; No. 4043 starts at Hradisko and lists several other places along the way. This lets you choose the route that best matches your planned point of interest. Check the route numbers locally before setting out.
