Diváky: Architecture, Literature and Archaeology
Accommodation in Diváky
When planning your stay in Diváky, you can choose your destinations based on three distinct themes: architectural history, literary heritage and archaeology. These sites represent different periods and forms of remembrance. Zámek Diváky and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary reveal the area’s architectural history; the Památník bratří Mrštíků is dedicated to the literary heritage of Alois and Vilém Mrštík; and Hradisko Burberk offers an archaeological perspective. Before choosing a hotel, you can consider which interests matter most to you during your stay.
Architectural history from the Baroque to the 19th century
Zámek Diváky is a Late Baroque building by the distinguished Baroque architect František Antonín Grimm. The château is listed as a state cultural monument. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has a different architectural history: it was created between 1873 and 1875 in the Historicist Romantic style, predominantly featuring Renaissance and Baroque elements, through the reconstruction of an older building dating from before 1601.
The church is mentioned in records from 1287 and 1351. These early dates should be distinguished from the construction period of the reconstructed building: they refer to mentions of the church, whereas 1873–1875 marks the period when it was created through reconstruction. Those interested in architecture will therefore find different points of interest here: a Late Baroque building, a church with an older predecessor, and a 19th-century redesign.
The literary heritage of the Mrštík brothers
The Památník bratří Mrštíků is located in the family home in Diváky, where Alois and Vilém Mrštík lived. Visitors can explore five rooms and the garden. Audiovisual presentations featuring members of the Mrštík family guide visitors through the rooms, enhancing the connection between the house and the brothers’ literary heritage. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours, as visiting times may vary.
Hradisko Burberk: hillfort and traces of settlement
Hradisko Burberk is a significant archaeological site in Diváky, classified as a hilltop settlement and fortification. The oval hillfort lies on a small promontory in the Ždánský les forest. Its described defensive features include a low earthen rampart and a double ditch on the south side. Its broad time span is also important for understanding the site: settlement has been documented from both the Early and Late Iron Ages, as well as the Middle Ages. This archaeological perspective complements the area’s architectural and literary history with evidence from much earlier periods.
Festivals and getting around the area
The Hody festival in Diváky takes place on the Sunday around the Feast of the Assumption on August 15; the exact Sunday varies. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date in advance. By contrast, the Divácké putování Maryša walking event takes place in Hustopeče in October. It has been held since 1977 and is connected with the literary heritage of Alois and Vilém Mrštík from nearby Diváky. The two events therefore differ both in timing and location: the Hody belongs to Diváky, while the walking event takes place in Hustopeče.
For cyclists, the Velkopavlovická cycle route is a useful reference point: it passes through Diváky, arriving from Šitbořice to the north and continuing east through the village. Beyond Diváky, it turns south towards Boleradice. Check the current signs on site if you are using the route to plan your trip.
