Perná: Viticulture, Architectural History and Pálava
Accommodation in Perná
Perná combines a viticultural history dating back to the 14th century with architectural heritage and the landscape at the foot of the Pavlovské vrchy. If you are planning a stay, these aspects of the village can help you decide: architectural history, wine-growing traditions and natural surroundings. The details below can help you find a focus for your trip.
The Parish Church and Perná’s Architectural History
The parish church of Saint Nicholas was built between 1510 and 1583 on the site of an earlier chapel. Its square tower is 42.5 metres high; a lower, tower-like rotunda was added in 1767. The long construction period and the later rotunda give the church several distinct historical phases.
Inside, a stone baptismal font from the first half of the 15th century has been preserved. It predates the construction of the parish church, providing an earlier point of reference in the history of the church.
Religious History and Traces of Everyday Life
The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua was built northwest of Perná in 1652. It was associated with famous and heavily attended pilgrimages; in 1786, the chapel was dissolved by imperial decree. Its history thus differs from that of the parish church: pilgrimage and dissolution are central to the chapel’s story.
The Holy Trinity group stands in Perná’s village square and dates from 1865. The Neo-Empire-style fountain in Perná dates from 1902 and was formerly used as a horse trough. The two objects point to different aspects of the village: its religious heritage and a former everyday use.
Viticulture and Grape Breeding
Viticulture in Perná dates back to the 14th century. A viticultural breeding station was established in Perná in 1946. Another milestone came in 1979, when the grape variety “Pálava” was bred, the first major success at the national level.
Pálava, Vineyards and Hiking Trails
Perná lies at the foot of the Pavlovské vrchy, between limestone cliffs and vineyards. The areas bordering Perná belong to the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. The ruins of Sirotčí hrad Castle also rise above Perná, adding a historical element to the landscape.
The western part of the cadastral area is planted with vineyards as well as apricot and peach orchards. Vineyards and orchards thus meet in the landscape; this location refers specifically to the western part of the cadastral area.
In the parts of the Pálava landscape bordering Perná, there is a dense network of marked hiking trails, often supplemented by educational trail panels. Numerous protected plant and animal species are also found there. For hikers, the village therefore offers a focus on nature and landscape alongside its architectural and viticultural history. Check the applicable visitor restrictions before setting out on a hike.
