Starovičky combines historic church architecture with Stations of the Cross, an observation tower and recurring village traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Starovičky, you can plan your trip around the aspect that interests you most: the Church of St. Catherine represents local history, U Obrázku offers views of the landscape, and Krojové hody gives a stay a distinct seasonal focus.

Church of St. Catherine and Stations of the Cross

The Church of St. Catherine is Starovičky’s most important historic monument and a local landmark. It dates from the 15th century; its form is reminiscent of single-nave Romanesque churches. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave. The comparison of forms and the date refer to two different aspects: the architectural style and the period in which the monument originated.

The Stations of the Cross comprise 14 stations in the form of crosses made from steel sections. The project was created near historic stone wayside shrines dating from the 15th century and was intended to connect them with the U Obrázku observation tower. This brings together wayside shrines and Stations of the Cross made with more modern materials. There is also an information board and seating near the wayside shrines close to Starovičky.

U Obrázku Observation Tower

The current U Obrázku observation tower was built on the site of the former Vyhlídka U Obrázku viewpoint and was approved for use on 11 December 2020. The tower has a covered shelter with seating. From the observation tower, there are unobstructed views of the Pavlovské vrchy, the Pálava lakes and the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Malé Karpaty).

The viewpoint offers a different focus from the church and Stations of the Cross: here, the landscape takes centre stage. The views stretch from the Pavlovské vrchy and the Pálava lakes to the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Malé Karpaty). If you are mainly interested in cultural sites when planning your trip, you can visit the church and Stations of the Cross; if you enjoy landscape views, the tower offers a destination of its own.

Festivals and regional traditions

Krojové hody takes place every year on the fourth Saturday and Sunday in July. The programme includes a festive procession of the Stárci and the costumed Chasa through the village, followed by an evening hody celebration. If you would like to plan your travel dates around the festival, check the specific programme for the date in question.

Starovičky is part of the Hanácké Slovácko region, where a southern variant of the Hanácko-Slovak folk costume is presented. Another regularly held event with a wine and folk theme is Zabíjačka s vinaři, organised by the Starovičky Winemakers’ Association; it is one of two regularly held events organised by the association. As event plans may change, check the specific dates if you are planning your trip around a festival.

The programme for the 9th Foot Pilgrimage in 2026 included, after a prayer at the cemetery, a walk to the Stations of the Cross, a Mass at the church at 4 pm, and then a get-together at the parish house. This sequence is described for the 2026 edition and offers further insight into the religious events held locally.

Lavandia and cycling

At the Lavandia lavender farm, the café and facilities for cyclists are among the main attractions. The café serves homemade lavender lemonade, selected coffees, cakes and ice cream; the selection may vary seasonally. The farm welcomes cyclists and provides bicycle racks by the lavender field. As visitor facilities may change, check the current arrangements before your visit.

This makes it easy to distinguish between different interests when planning your trip: the church, wayside shrines and Stations of the Cross offer historic and religious points of interest; the observation tower draws attention to the landscape; festivals provide specific dates, while Lavandia combines a café with bicycle racks. When choosing your travel dates, both the date of the relevant event and seasonal changes to the café offering are therefore worth considering.
