Discover Úsobrno
Accommodation in Úsobrno
Úsobrno combines a layered local history with the landscape of the Durana Nature Reserve. Here, the Mýtočínský potok, a stand of beech trees with several large firs, and a hillfort site meet the history of glassmaking. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius and the municipal museum add their own historical notes. If you are looking for a hotel in Úsobrno, these different themes can help you match the town to your interests.
Landscape and hillfort at Durana
The Mýtočínský potok winds through the valley of the Durana Nature Reserve, below the Úsobrno glassworks. The reserve encompasses a unique complex of beech stands with several large firs. The stream and the trees provide two specific points of reference in the landscape; the glassworks also serves as a landmark in the description of the valley and as part of the town’s history.
The hillfort site is also located at Durana. The fortification is almost circular, has a diameter of 50 to 60 metres, and is bounded by a wide rampart and a ditch. Its history dates back to a time when the hillfort site was mentioned as a provincial centre in forged documents from the second half of the 11th century. The site fell into decline in the second half of the 13th century. Both the fortification’s distinctive shape and its historical context are central here.
Glassmaking and local history
Count Karl Maria Strachwitz founded the glassworks named after him, Karlshütte, in Úsobrno in 1827. This date anchors glassmaking in the town’s history; it is also one of the subjects covered at the municipal museum. The museum also presents the history of agriculture, historical photographs of the municipality and municipal chronicles. Exhibits include the banners of Úsobrno and its Volunteer Fire Brigade.
A visit to the museum is possible by prior arrangement with the municipal office. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm the current contact details at the same time. The museum offers a different way to explore local history than looking at individual historic buildings: its focus is on collections and topics from the life of the municipality.
Church, organ and historic mills
The present-day Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius stands on the site of a demolished chapel and was built between 1948 and 1951. The church houses an organ dating from 1850, which underwent extensive restoration in 2002. Two dates thus come together in the same building: the instrument is older than the present church, while its restoration took place much later. Both the church’s construction period and the older organ are of interest to local history.
The Brichtovský Mill is one of Úsobrno’s notable sights. The Horní Mill is the oldest surviving building in the town; it was built around 1610 and is inaccessible. The two mills thus represent different aspects of the local heritage: the Brichtovský Mill is highlighted as a sight, while the Horní Mill is distinguished by its age and state of preservation.
Cycling through Úsobrno
A route runs through Úsobrno and splits at Trnávka in two directions, towards Hradec Králové and Jeseník. It is known as the Jantarová stezka. If you are planning a cycling trip, check the signage and route conditions before setting out. The long-distance cycle route is a separate consideration when planning your trip, alongside the town’s landscape and historical themes.
When looking for a hotel in Úsobrno, you can weigh up your interests: Durana is home to both the nature reserve and the hillfort site; Karlshütte and the museum explore the history of glassmaking; the church and organ offer different historical time markers. This makes it easier to match the character of the town to the focus of your stay.
