Valchov: Hiking Trails, Cycling Route and Local History
Accommodation in Valchov
Valchov lies on the edge of the Drahanská vrchovina. The landscape is predominantly hilly and wooded, with cultivated fields and meadows as well. The Valchovka, an important watercourse, flows through Valchov. The village therefore brings together wooded areas, open agricultural land and a watercourse running through it. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether hiking, cycling or local history is your main priority. In addition to the trails, the chapel, former mill and historical traces add their own distinctive character.
Hiking on Marked Trails
Two marked hiking trails can be distinguished by their destinations. The red-marked trail passes through Valchov and connects the village with Boskovice and Žďárná. The yellow-marked trail starts in the village centre and leads to Sloup and the Sloupsko-Šošůvské Caves. The destination you have in mind is therefore a useful guide: Boskovice and Žďárná are on the red trail, while Sloup and the caves are destinations on the yellow one. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current signage for the yellow-marked trail. This lets you choose your route based on the named destinations and take the markings into account when planning.
Cycling Route Through Valchov
Cycling Route No. 5227 also passes through Valchov. Its listed sequence of places is Boskovice, Hrádkov, Valchov, Velenov, Suchý, Skalky, Benešov and Pavlov. In this sequence, Valchov lies between Hrádkov and Velenov. This places the village on a route connecting several named places. Unlike the hiking trails, the cycling route is described by a number and a continuous sequence of places; for hiking, colour markings and destinations help distinguish the trails. These details offer different points of reference when deciding whether to make a cycling route or a hiking trail the focus of your stay.
Chapel, Mill and Historical Traces
The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul was consecrated on 29 June 2003. The design of its front wall is by woodcarver Ivo Krajíček. The chapel thus combines a precise consecration date with an artistic design attributed to a specific person. Another architectural landmark is the former mill with its millpond. It is a building of folk architecture, and its exterior has been preserved. For those interested in local history, the chapel and mill offer different themes: the chapel is notable for its consecration and the design of its front wall, while the mill is significant as an example of folk architecture, with its preserved exterior and millpond.
The area’s former uses also form part of its historical picture: iron ore was mined around Valchov. West of the village, near a forester’s lodge, are the remains of a nitrate works. References to ore mining and the nitrate works thus add further aspects of the region’s past to its built heritage. If you plan to visit the remains of the nitrate works, check their condition on site.
