Katavolos on Corfu: Coast and Krouzeri Beach
Accommodation in Katavolos
Katavolos is a coastal settlement on the northeastern coast of Corfu. Green hills surround the village, with some houses overlooking the sea. When searching for a hotel, you can therefore place Katavolos in context through two specific landscape features: its coastal setting and its green, hilly surroundings. Krouzeri Beach is part of the local landscape and, with its dimensions, orientation and pebbled surface, offers additional points to consider when planning.
Krouzeri Beach: orientation and surface
Krouzeri Beach faces southeast, is 350 metres long and an average of 10 metres wide. Its length and average width describe different dimensions of the beach, while the direction provides another point of reference. The beach and seabed are covered with small pebbles. If the nature of the surface is important to you, you can take this into account both for the shore and for the water. The northeastern coastal setting describes the settlement, while the southeast orientation describes the beach.
Activities and getting to the beach
Swimming and water sports are possible at Krouzeri Beach. Pedal boats and motorboats are available for hire. When planning your day at the beach, you can consider swimming, water sports and boat hire as different options. Activities and facilities may change; check what is currently available locally.
Green Bus routes A4, A5 and A12 stop on the main road in Katavolos. From there, it is a 500-metre walk to Krouzeri Beach. The stop is therefore not directly at the beach; include the walk in your plans. Routes and service may change, so check current transport information before travelling.
Corfu as a wider travel context
Beyond Katavolos, Corfu also offers an urban and cultural centre of interest. Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town has a collection of more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. For trip planning, this offers a choice between the coastal village and beach on the one hand, and the historic urban fabric and museum collection on the other.
The Archaeological Museum of Corfu was built primarily to display the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment dates to 585 BC and was excavated near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery in 1911. The Old Town and its collections thus offer a cultural focus different from Katavolos’s coastal landscape: the emphasis here is on the historic urban fabric and museum objects.
Another landscape of interest on Corfu is in the municipal unit of Achilleion. Ancient paths wind through the forested mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. These paths offer a distinct theme for travellers who would like to include hiking landscapes on Corfu alongside the coast and culture.
