Roumanades and its history

If you are looking for a hotel in Roumanades, it helps to consider the history of the surrounding area separately from the cultural attractions of the wider destination of Corfu. This lets you tailor your choice to whether you are mainly interested in historical connections near Roumanades or in other museums, the Old Town and hiking trails on Corfu.

The Trivolis Mansion is near Roumanades. Construction began in the mid-18th century, toward the end of Venetian rule. The building has Venetian architectural features; its construction period and design therefore provide two specific points of reference for understanding its history.

The old village of Roumanádes is also nearby. Its name comes from the first settlers, the Romano family, which is described as being of Byzantine origin. The village is abandoned, and today only ruins and mass graves of plague victims remain visible there. If you plan to include the ruins in your itinerary, check access arrangements in advance.

Corfu as a wider destination

On Corfu, the Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town provides residents and visitors with information on more than 80 attractions, supplemented by high-quality audiovisual material. Check whether the guide is available before your trip.

The museums on Corfu also cover a range of subjects. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon-Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. The museum was built primarily to exhibit it.

The permanent exhibition at the Kapodistrias Museum explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor, using significant artefacts and documents. The museum also has a lush garden on a hill, offering views of Corfu’s landscape and across the island. Casa Parlante offers a different historical perspective: in Corfu’s Old Town, it recreates the daily life of the island’s aristocracy in the 19th century with moving figures and replicated furnishings and interiors.

Another historical destination on Corfu is the Achilleion Summer Palace in Gastouri, built in the Pompeian style in 1892. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the forested mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The 180-kilometre Corfu Trail is a separate route: it passes through several settlements, and Benitses is one of its 13 daily-stage locations.

Trails, events and beaches on Corfu

The villages of the municipal unit of Achilleion on Corfu host numerous festivals and folk festivals, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality; the programme varies. If events are important to your trip, check the specific dates in advance. Benitses Beach offers another option for planning your trip: in addition to the marina, it has a developed, narrow sandy beach with facilities for people with disabilities.
