In Eigersund, coastal history and nature experiences go hand in hand: Lindøy battery is located at the entrance to Egersund harbour, while marked routes, Bronze Age traces and swimming areas offer further ideas for your trip. There is also an interactive experience centre and a guided tour with beer tasting. When planning your trip, first consider whether you would prefer to focus on local history, hiking and cycling, or time by the water.

Coastal and local history

Lindøy battery is a historic coastal fort at the entrance to Egersund harbour. The fort has a restored powder house and cannons. Stapnes Fort, from the Second World War, consists of bunkers and gun emplacements and is located in the Stapnes recreation area. In the centre of Egersund, people have gathered at Egersund Church for more than 800 years to attend services and celebrate important life events.

Another trace in the cultural landscape is Litlå klopp, a stone arch bridge thought to date from the 18th century and part of an old route between Egersund and Hauge. The Egersund Fayancemuseum displays objects from the factory’s long history and illustrates its importance to the town of Egersund.

Archaeology and trails

Varberg has short nature trails and a path to the summit. From there, you can look out over the town, the harbour entrance and the district. At the foot of the hill are rock carvings or runes from the Late Bronze Age, dating to approximately 1000–500 BC. Stoplesteinane also invites visitors to explore traces of the past: the stone circle dates from the Iron Age and consists of 16 upright stones. An easy but steep footpath leads there and takes about 20 minutes. Trail conditions may vary, so treat this time as a guide.

Den Gamle Jærbanen is a continuous hiking and cycling trail from Hellvik to Egersund, following much of the route of the old Jæren railway. Northeast of Egersund, Vannbassengan has several kilometres of nature and cultural trails. A marked trail also leads from the centre of Egersund to Trollpikken.

Near Helleland, Mysinghålå is located on Mysingheia, about 20 kilometres from the centre of Egersund. The area has a 10-kilometre marked hiking trail. The resistance group Vestige IV of the Linge Company, known as the “Aakre-gjengen,” used Mysinghålå intermittently as a hideout for over a year. This makes the site both a hiking destination and a place connected to the history of the resistance.

Coast and swimming areas

Skadbergsanden is the largest swimming area in Eigersund municipality. It has more than 500 metres of shallow sandy beach and low sand dunes. GĂĄdĂĄ is a shallow freshwater swimming area with small beaches, as well as a spot for jumping and diving. The two places offer different settings for time by the water.

Auglend is on the southern tip of Søre Eigerøya and is a coastal recreation area. Facilities include parking, information about nature and culture, toilets and a marked trail. Eigersund municipality is also part of the Magma UNESCO Global Geopark.

Activities with a special focus

AstroSenteret in Egersund is an interactive experience centre that combines an indoor play area, technology and activities in one building. Up to 16 players can take part at the same time in the free-roam VR arena. A very different activity is a guided tour at Berentsens Brygghus: it combines the history of beer and insights into the production of craft beer with a tasting of five different beers. Check the booking details in advance, as they may change.

Make your choice based on the experiences you plan to include in your stay.
