The Nitra Region is in southwestern Slovakia and borders Hungary along its entire southern side. With protected landscapes, historic castle complexes and special places to visit, there are plenty of reasons to explore the region. To plan your stay, it helps to first consider what you want it to focus on: nature and wildlife, cultural sites, or activities involving horses and wine.

Landscape, Plants and Waterbirds

The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area lies in the Tribeč and Vtáčnik geomorphological units. In Tribeč, oak-hornbeam and oak forests grow, along with beech forests at higher elevations. Heat-loving plant communities predominate. Rare and protected plant species are found in the protected area, including the large-flowered pasque flower and the Turk's cap lily. The region's nature can also be explored through its plant life, from the character of its forests to individual protected species.

Žitavský luh offers a different nature experience. The area is an important stopover for migrating waterbirds, particularly the garganey (Anas querquedula). Those interested in bird migration will find a different focus here than among the forests and plants of Ponitrie. The two themes offer different ways to observe nature and need not be combined into a single outing.

Nature Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Zobor nature trail starts at the Liečebný ústav Zobor in Nitra. This designated starting point makes it easy to include the trail in your plans for Nitra. For climbing enthusiasts, the Via Ferrata Zobor offers secured climbing routes with an instructor and full equipment. Check the current arrangements and equipment availability before your trip.

In the Zubria zvernica Lovce protected area, a 2.5-kilometre forest nature trail winds through the surrounding countryside. Information boards and educational content make it a distinct way to learn about the area as you go. Its length provides a concrete guide for planning your time; it does not indicate a particular walking pace or level of difficulty.

Castles and Culture in Nitra and Levice

Nitriansky hrad Castle is a national cultural monument. Its complex includes a cathedral, a bishop's palace, utility buildings and an outer fortification. These structures reflect the different functions within the castle grounds. The grounds are also home to the Diocesan Museum, which opened in 2007 as Slovakia's first diocesan museum.

The ruins of the Gothic Levický hrad Castle stand in Levice. The castle was built in the second half of the 13th century. From its summit, you can enjoy views of the city of Levice and the surrounding area. It is a destination where historic architecture and views over the city come together.

Arboretum, Stud Farm and Wine

The Mlyňany Arboretum is home to more than 2,300 tree and plant species. If you are interested in the diversity of trees and plants, this wealth of species is a reason in itself to include the arboretum in your travel plans.

The Topoľčianky National Stud Farm was founded in 1563. Activities offered there include stud farm tours, horse shows and horse riding. Which option suits your plans depends on whether you want to explore the stud farm or take part in a riding activity; confirm availability before your trip. At Pivnica Radošina, you can enjoy wine tastings. The winery also organizes tours of the winery and vineyards. Confirm tasting and tour times in advance.

Plan Your Stay to Suit Your Needs

Next, check the exact location of your accommodation against which of the destinations that matter to you you want to visit. The Nitran Express tourist train runs seasonally, departing every hour on the hour from Svätoplukovo námestie in Nitra. If you plan to take it, check the timetable and departure arrangements before your trip.
