Discover Travnica: Windmill and Manors
Accommodation in Travnica
Travnica is a destination for travelers who want to include historic buildings and the development of a place in their trip. Highlights include a national cultural monument, several manors with different architectural features, and an educational trail about local history. These attractions have different points of focus: the Veterná studňa represents historic water technology, while the manors showcase architectural styles and alterations from different periods.
The Veterná studňa and the water supply
The Veterná studňa is located in the western part of Trávnica in the Nové Zámky District. The national cultural monument was built around 1920. Originally, the installation pumped water into a gravity-fed water supply system. A manor house, a distillery, and a stable were connected to this system. The well’s function can therefore be linked to supplying several different facilities—a different way of looking at the monument than considering only when it was built.
In autumn 2017, the Veterná studňa underwent extensive restoration and was made operational again. This completed restoration marks a precise point in the installation’s history. Together with its former purpose, it traces a path from historic use to restoration: the well is both an architectural record and an example of water-management technology.
Manors: location, architectural style, and alterations
On the western side of Trávnica, in the direction of Maňa, stands the Kaštieľ Ladislava Barlanghiho, built by Ladislav Barlanghyi in 1862. The late Baroque Kaštieľ Rudnyianszkych is located in the center. The Kaštieľ Balogovcov is a classicist manor house that has been altered several times and is next to the church. Rudolf Tarisch had it extensively remodeled in 1928.
The three manors therefore differ in location, style, and building history: one is associated with the year 1862, another is described as late Baroque and centrally located, while the third combines classicist architecture with several phases of alteration. If you are interested in the town’s architecture, this comparison offers concrete points of reference without reducing the buildings to a single period.
Park and distinctive tree species
West of the Kaštieľ Ladislava Barlanghiho is a park with exotic trees. These include a plane tree with maple-shaped leaves, a ginkgo, and a tulip tree. The tree species add a distinct landscape dimension to the building history. The manor’s surroundings are therefore part of the picture too, with specific botanical details complementing the architecture.
Educational trail and finding your way around town
The educational trail “História a súčasnosť obce Trávnica” (History and Present of the Municipality of Trávnica) starts in the center of Trávnica, in front of the Trávnica Primary School building. Its name places the municipality’s history and present side by side. The starting point also helps with orientation: the trail begins in the center, while the Veterná studňa is in the western part of town.
Getting there by bus and train
Regular bus services connect Trávnica with Podhájska and the towns of Vráble, Šurany, and Nové Zámky. The nearest railway station is in Podhájska, where you can connect to the Bratislava–Nové Zámky–Levice–Zvolen railway line. This means that bus services to several of the places mentioned and a railway connection in Podhájska offer different points of reference for planning your trip. Check the latest timetables before you set off to make sure your chosen connection fits your travel plans.
Podhájska as a nearby day-trip destination
The nearby Podhájska thermal spa is the main tourist attraction for visitors to Trávnica. It offers another consideration when choosing a destination, alongside the cultural monuments and local history. If you are planning your stay with this in mind, you can consider Trávnica’s cultural attractions and the thermal spa in Podhájska separately as part of your trip.
