Discover Kolárovo: Watermill and Cultural History
Accommodation in Kolárovo
Kolárovo can be explored through a range of cultural and natural themes, including its floating watermill, historic churches, local traditions and the Little Danube. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Kolárovo, these highlights can help you decide on your destination. The watermill brings together themes of technology and nature, while the churches, dance tradition and cultural centre offer further perspectives on the city’s history and cultural life.
Floating Watermill and Nature Trail
The floating watermill in Kolárovo is the last floating mill in Slovakia. It stands on an oxbow of the Little Danube. A covered bridge, built entirely of wood, leads to the mill; the Museum of Water Milling is located on its grounds. The watermill is open to the general public as a national cultural monument. Check access arrangements before your visit.
The museum also features a unique machine for making fishing nets, described as one of the first of its kind in the world. The nature trail by the watermill is aimed primarily at visitors to the mill and provides information about the local fauna and flora, as well as the history associated with Kolárovo. Its subject matter also encompasses the natural, scenic and historical values of the area around the Lodný mlyn national cultural monument. This highlight brings together the history of technology with themes of nature and landscape.
Churches and the House of Folk Traditions
The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque building. It was built in 1723–1724 on the site of an older Gothic church and enlarged in 1772. Inside is a late Baroque barrel vault. Its construction, predecessor building and later extension bring the different stages of its history to life. The Chapel of Saint Rosalia has its own building history: the Baroque building dates from the 1750s, and its tower was added at the end of the 19th century.
The House of Folk Traditions features a reconstructed old farmhouse with historically styled period furnishings. It provides space for various folk crafts, art exhibitions and activities to care for and preserve folk traditions. Alongside its religious buildings, Kolárovo’s cultural themes therefore include rural life and traditional crafts.
Traditions and Cultural Life
The Turíčny dance procession is a local tradition dating back more than a hundred years. It is considered one of the community’s most important social events and an important means of preserving Hungarian identity. Its long history and social significance offer a different way to explore the town’s history than its buildings: here, community life and cultural identity take centre stage.
The municipal cultural centre holds several exhibitions each year, featuring works by well-known amateur artists, painters and photographers. It also co-organises Kolárovská lýra, an international amateur singing competition. Its cultural mission includes preserving and promoting local folk traditions and Slovak, Hungarian and European cultural values. Exhibitions, the singing competition and the dance tradition thus represent different facets of local cultural life.
The Little Danube and Regional Activities
The Little Danube is navigable from Vrakuňa, a district of Bratislava, to Kolárovo. The watermill’s location on an oxbow of this river also shapes the town. Another historical feature of the area is the ruins of Žabí hrad, originally called Hrad Mieru. They lie in a wooded wetland near the confluence of the Little Danube and the Váh.
In the wider region around Kolárovo, the Georgina family winery offers wine and cheese tastings by prior arrangement. Confirm current availability when booking. Also in the wider region is the Mŕtve rameno Váhu stop on the Komárno–Kolárovo route. Water bikes and bicycle rentals are available there; check locally for current availability.
