Steibis: Nature, Imberg and Winter Trails
Accommodation in Steibis
Steibis appeals to travelers who want to consider nature and specific activities when choosing where to stay. The Hochgratbahn is located in Oberstaufen-Steibis and provides a clear reference point for getting your bearings in the area.
Natural surroundings and regional overview
Steibis and Aach are located in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park and form a recreational area near Oberstaufen for nature lovers. In the wider Oberstaufen destination, the Hochgrat and the Nagelfluhkette rise above Oberstaufen. At 1,834 meters, the Hochgrat is the highest mountain in the western Allgäu. The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park contains five landscape conservation areas, including the Hörnergruppe, the Nagelfluhkette and the Großer Alpsee.
In Oberstaufen, three mountain railways take you up into the mountains or make it easier to descend back into the valley. The Hochgratbahn takes you to Oberstaufen’s local mountain at alpine elevations; it operates seasonally. In addition, four hiking trails in Oberstaufen have been awarded premium trail status by the German Hiking Institute. This gives you two distinct points of reference when planning a hike: the themed trail on the Imberg and the award-winning hiking trails in the wider Oberstaufen destination. The circular tour to the veteran trees is a loop hike through the alpine area between the Hochgrat and Imberg.
Hiking and family activities on the Imberg
The Imberg Alpine Adventure Trail is a signposted circular route across the high plateau on the Imberg, with a total of 47 stations. They provide information about the region and Allgäu alpine farming. The loop combines exercise with insights into the landscape and its management. If you are interested in work on the alpine pastures, this offers a specific theme to focus on when planning your visit.
There is also a MounTeens detective trail on the Imberg: families can follow the trail of smugglers and solve a case. The two trails have clearly distinct themes: the circular route provides information about the region and alpine farming, while the detective trail follows a smuggling story and gives you a task to solve. The Imberg forest ropes course is right in the hiking area and can be reached on foot from either the valley or mountain station of the Imbergbahn. Since access conditions may change seasonally, it is best to check them before your visit.
Winter and mountain railways
In winter, Steibis offers idyllic winter hiking trails and extensive ski slopes. The two options suit different day plans: one is for hiking, the other for skiing. Seasonal operating conditions may vary, so plan according to the latest conditions for your intended travel dates. The mountain railways in the wider Oberstaufen destination take you up into the mountains or make it easier to descend back into the valley. The Hochgratbahn operates seasonally.
