Friedberg offers a range of highlights for a stay: historic architecture, city history, a recurring cultural event and leisure activities at Friedberger See. When planning your trip, it helps to decide first whether you want to focus mainly on sights and museums, an event or the lake. These interests can also provide a starting point when looking for a hotel in Friedberg.

City History and Architecture

Marienplatz is recommended as a starting point for exploring Friedberg. The Historic Town Hall stands there, with a coffered ceiling dating from the time it was built and frescoes by history painter Josef Widmann. Another striking feature is the historic city wall: almost all of its towers are still fully preserved. The signposted City Walk II provides more information about the wall. This lets you explore the structure and the walk from different perspectives on the same subject. The red-and-white-banded façade of St. James’ Parish Church is a defining feature of Friedberg’s skyline.

Wittelsbach Castle is a four-wing complex surrounded by a castle moat. It originated as a High Medieval castle built around 1257 under Duke Ludwig II the Strict. The pilgrimage church of Herrgottsruh, also known as “Our Lord’s Rest,” was built from 1731 to 1753 and is considered one of the finest works of Bavarian Rococo. Its chancel murals, by Cosmas Damian Asam, have been fully visible again since the comprehensive restoration in 2007. The castle and church offer different historical and architectural points of interest for a visit.

Museum, Tours and Events

The museum in Wittelsbach Castle features collections of Friedberg faience, archaeology—including important finds from beyond the region—and sacred art. A free audio guide is available in German, English, French and Italian; there is also a dedicated children’s audio guide. Languages and media offerings may change, so it is advisable to check before your visit.

Friedberg Tourist Information offers themed “journeys through time” exploring the city’s history. These include tours for children, the path of water, the world of a clockmaker around 1750, the life of a maid, Friedberg as a Wittelsbach-founded town, and fortified Friedberg. The themes offer different perspectives: water, crafts, everyday life, the town’s founding and fortifications complement the focus on buildings and collections. This lets you explore the city’s history through whichever subject interests you most.

“Friedberger Zeit” is a recurring cultural event in Friedberg, held every three years. Dates and programs may change, so check the specific dates if you want to plan your trip around it. Wittelsbach Castle hosts a variety of public and private events. The castle was fully renovated in 2019; event programs may also change.

Leisure Activities at Friedberger See

Friedberger See offers a different focus. Facilities include a wakeboarding facility, beach volleyball courts, sunbathing lawns, playgrounds, a swimming island, a jetty with benches, a kiosk, a restaurant, sanitary facilities, a water rescue service, and parking for cars and motorhomes. Some facilities may operate seasonally; check which ones will be available on your travel dates before visiting. Unlike the town hall, city wall and museum, the lake focuses on leisure and water activities. Its possible seasonal operation is therefore a separate factor to consider when planning.

Friedberg is also a destination for travelers following the Romantic Road. When choosing your travel dates, you can take into account cultural events and the seasonal availability of some facilities at the lake.
