Freystadt’s historic town center and several named routes are at the heart of the town. The Historic Market Square is framed by two city gates and closely built historic houses. The Spital zu Freystadt, a culturally significant monument of regional importance dating from the 13th century, stands by the southern city gate. The square, gates and houses give the town a distinct historical focus.

Market square, church and former fortifications

The Powder Tower in Betzgarten is a surviving part of the former fortifications and is one of Freystadt’s attractions. It is a visible reminder of the city’s former defenses. The Maria Hilf pilgrimage church provides a different architectural accent: its gleaming green dome is framed by four towers and crowned by a gilded Madonna. Those interested in architectural forms can view the dome, its framing by the towers and its crowning figure as elements of a unified design.

Art and views from the city gates

In spring and autumn, exhibitions are regularly held in the Upper Gate Tower under the motto “Art in the Tower.” If you plan to visit, check the current exhibition dates. The towers of the Upper and Lower Gates also offer a special vantage point over the town: visitors who explore them and climb to the upper floor can enjoy views of the Historic Market Square and the Schwarzach Valley. Check current access to the towers in advance if you plan to take in the view.

Routes through and from Freystadt

The Tour de Baroque runs from Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz via Freystadt to Berching, then follows the former Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal back to its starting point. In Freystadt, it passes the Historic Market Square and the Asam stucco work in the Maria Hilf pilgrimage church. Freystadt is also a stage destination on the Five Rivers Cycle Route. These are two distinct route connections: Freystadt is a stage destination on the Five Rivers Cycle Route, while the Tour de Baroque follows a specific route through the town.

There are also several landmarks to guide hikers. The “On to Sulzbürg” hike starts at the market square and follows the sign southeast along the Jurasteig–Seenland spur. The “Blue Stripe,” also known as the Berching Trail, is a 58-kilometer hiking route; its first stage ends in Freystadt. When planning, it is important to distinguish between the two: 58 kilometers is the length of the route, while Freystadt is named as the destination of the first stage.

Wildlife watching and seasonal swimming

A seven-meter-high birdwatching tower stands on the edge of the Schwarzachtal meadows, offering views into the nature reserve. Freystadt Natural Swimming Pool has a swimming area, a children’s playground, a beach volleyball court, fitness equipment and a table tennis table. These facilities are freely accessible and free to use; the pool is a seasonal swimming attraction. Wildlife watching from the tower and swimming with additional sports and play facilities offer different options for planning a day out.
