Berg can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the Votive Chapel combines architectural history with the commemoration of King Ludwig II, the King Ludwig Trail describes a hike starting at the chapel, and the audio walk features individual stops. The observatory complements these cultural and historical perspectives with observations of the starry sky.

Votive Chapel and the Commemoration of King Ludwig II

The Votive Chapel in Berg Palace Park was built in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its history is closely connected with the commemoration of King Ludwig II: in June 1896, Prince Regent Luitpold laid the foundation stone for the chapel on the tenth anniversary of the king’s death. Every year, a solemn memorial mass for Ludwig II is held there around 13 June. If you plan to attend the mass, confirm the current arrangements locally.

Another place of remembrance lies below the Votive Chapel: a simple wooden cross in the shallow waters of Lake Starnberg marks the spot where King Ludwig II was found lifeless on 13 June 1886, after a walk with Prof. von Gudden. The chapel and the cross offer different points of focus: the chapel centers on architectural history and commemoration, while the lakeshore recalls the specific historical location.

King Ludwig Trail and Audio Walk

The King Ludwig Trail begins at the Votive Chapel in Berg and runs through Starnberg and the Maisinger Gorge to Maising. The description thus names both the starting point and the places along the route, as well as its destination. In the wider region, the King Ludwig Trail is marked on maps and signs with a blue “K” and a crown on a white background.

The King Ludwig II audio walk offers a different format: its seven stops are spread across Starnberg, Kempfenhausen, Berg and Leoni. They have no fixed order, are free of charge and can be accessed independently of one another; the walk is suitable for all ages. While the King Ludwig Trail is a hike from the Votive Chapel to Maising via several named stops, you can access the audio stops in any order. This distinguishes a described route from individual audio stops.

The Berger Cultural Walk also explores the municipality: information boards explain places of cultural and historical interest in Berg. The municipality is also home to the Bismarck Tower near Assenhausen. It is the only Bismarck monument in Upper Bavaria whose planning and construction began during Bismarck’s lifetime. The tower adds another historical focus to the themes surrounding Ludwig II, without being part of the same story.

Observatory in the Municipality of Berg

Depending on the planets’ current positions, you can observe celestial bodies in the solar system at the Berger Observatory in the municipality of Berg. The listed viewing opportunities include Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s cloud bands and some of its moons, as well as the polar ice caps of Mars. Which of these planets can be observed at any given time depends on their current positions. The observatory is a separate attraction for anyone interested in astronomical observations.

Berg’s attractions differ not only in subject matter but also in form: the chapel and wooden cross are historical sites, the hike and audio walk offer different ways to explore the King Ludwig theme, and the information boards cover places of cultural and historical interest in the municipality. The observatory adds planetary observation to this selection. You can plan your stay around whichever of these specifically described aspects interests you most.
