Rodder: Eifel Panorama, St. Rochus and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Rodder
Rodder lies between the High Eifel and the Ahr Eifel. Open panoramic views, the history of St. Rochus Chapel and hiking opportunities offer three distinct starting points for planning a trip. The village can be explored through its landscape, its local architectural and cultural history, and its hiking themes.
Mountain Panorama and Landscape
The view stretches to Nürburg, Hohe Acht, Kelberger Kopf, Aremberg, Hoffelder Kopf and Michelsberg. The surrounding mountains are described as being of volcanic origin. These named heights make the panorama more tangible, while the geological classification adds another dimension to the landscape. If wide-ranging views are particularly important when choosing a destination, you can consider these features alongside Rodder’s historical and hiking-related themes.
St. Rochus Chapel and Wayside Shrine
A chapel in Rodder is first mentioned in 1428. St. Rochus is a quarry-stone building with four bays and a narrower chancel. During its reconstruction in 1907, the lava-stone surround of the round-arched portal, dated 1745, was reused. The building style and portal thus offer different clues to the chapel’s history: the first mention was followed by the dated portal surround and, later, the reconstruction.
The furnishings include a Baroque altar from the 17th century, preserved from the older chapel, as well as two bells dating from 1481 and 1558. The altarpiece depicts the Crucifixion, with Mary shown above as Queen of Heaven. The altar, bells and portal represent different historical elements and complement the architectural features with details about the sacred furnishings.
Another local landmark is the wayside shrine of the Madonna on BergstraĂźe.
Hiking and Practical Planning
The “In the Footsteps of Old Mills” hiking route passes through Rodder and continues toward Wirft, which is eight kilometres away. The route alternates between mountain ridges with expansive views, waterways and forest sections. It is marked throughout with its hiking logo. These details give an impression of the varied landscapes and the route’s waymarking.
Along the regional route, Hahnensteiner MĂĽhle and Gillig's MĂĽhle can be visited by appointment. Arrange a visit in advance. A multi-day route is 70.1 kilometres long and rated moderate. Check the route specifications again before travelling, as they may change.
Culture in Ahrweiler
In the wider destination of Ahrweiler, the Haus der Schützen displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries. These include uniforms, pictorial documentation and historic marksmen’s rifles. Ahrweiler’s three marksmen’s associations have run a museum since 2002; visits are possible by appointment. The Roman Villa on Silberberg in Ahrweiler offers visitors a model of a Roman estate as well as an audiovisual presentation.
Ahrweiler thus adds further cultural and historical themes to the picture of Rodder, which specifically belong to this wider destination.
