Discover Kadenbach: History and Nature
Accommodation in Kadenbach
Kadenbach offers two distinct local themes for planning a trip: a history dating back to the Middle Ages and the nature-focused Binnbachtal Nature Experience Trail. There is also the Maria in der Augst Chapel, completed in 2000. If you are looking for a hotel in Kadenbach, these themes can help guide your plans: are you more interested in local history, a nature-filled circular walk, or the Westerwald region’s hiking and geology? Looking at the wider Westerwald destination adds further regional themes to the local highlights.
History in Kadenbach
Kadenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1110. In 1216, the village, together with St. Florin’s Hospital, passed to the Teutonic Order; Kadenbach remained associated with the Koblenz branch of the Teutonic Order until 1809. This history is also reflected in the village coat of arms. The local history can therefore be understood through both specific dates and a visible symbol.
Nature in the Binnbachtal Valley
The Binnbachtal Nature Experience Trail is a circular route of about 2.5 kilometres through an idyllic valley between Kadenbach and Eitelborn. Information boards and a focus on nature shape the experience; the trail is recommended for families with children. It opened in 1999, and the information boards were renewed in 2016. For trip planning, the route offers a specific outdoor option alongside exploring the village’s history. Its approximate length, circular layout and information boards give the nature theme a distinct character.
Maria in der Augst Chapel
The Maria in der Augst Chapel is also associated with Kadenbach. It was completed in 2000. In chronological terms, the local cultural story thus spans from the medieval history of the Teutonic Order to a much more recent construction date.
Hiking and Earth History in the Westerwald
In the wider Westerwald destination, long-distance hiking trails offer a different scale of experience from the circular route in the Binnbachtal Valley. The WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometres through the Westerwald and is divided into 16 stages. The Druidensteig is 94 kilometres long, runs through seven river valleys over seven day stages and features more than 30 geo-information points. The routes can be distinguished by their length, number of stages and geological information on offer. Before hiking the WesterwaldSteig, it is advisable to consult the current route planner; the Druidensteig’s interpretive infrastructure may change over time.
Another regional highlight is Stöffel Park in the Westerwald. This former basalt quarry, covering around 140 hectares, combines industrial heritage, earth history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse,” which documents around 25 million years of Earth’s history. Thus, alongside hiking trails, the region also offers earth history and the history of basalt extraction as distinct themes.
The historic town centre of Hachenburg also offers a cultural perspective on the region. Restored half-timbered houses define the area around the Alter Markt; the Lion Fountain is part of its historic atmosphere. The town’s historic architecture and Kadenbach’s local history thus complement the nature and earth-history themes with another cultural perspective.
