Römnitz lies on the eastern shore of Lake Ratzeburg. The historic center is on a peninsula that forms the narrow connection between Lake Ratzeburg and Domsee. Alongside its lakeside setting, the Römnitz estate is one of the village’s defining historic features. If you choose a destination based on its landscape and architectural heritage, you will find two distinct points of interest here.

The Römnitz Estate and Its Architectural History

The Römnitz estate is located on Dorfstraße and is a listed historic farm complex. The ensemble includes a tenant farmer’s house dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as farm buildings, former stables, a forge, a field barn, and historic street paving. It preserves the core of a historic three-sided farmstead. A three-sided farmstead is a group of farm buildings arranged along three sides of a courtyard. The term draws attention to the layout of the farmstead as a whole rather than to any one building.

Historically, the estate is connected with the medieval restoration and provisioning of the Bishopric of Ratzeburg. The farm complex can therefore be understood both through its historic layout and in this historical context.

Hiking Around Lake Ratzeburg

The 27-kilometer circular hiking route runs around Lake Ratzeburg. Its length provides a specific reference point for planning your hike. Check trail conditions locally before setting out. The European long-distance hiking trails E1, E6, and E9 offer a different option: they run from north to south through the Duchy of Lauenburg, via Ratzeburg, Mölln, and Lauenburg. The circular route around the lake is thus an alternative to the regional north–south routes.

The Wider Destination: The Duchy of Lauenburg

The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park lies in the heart of the Duchy of Lauenburg. The nature park has hiking trails, observation towers, educational trails, and places to rest. Visitors can hike, cycle, canoe, and swim in the forest lakes; there are also four signposted cycling routes. Guided excursions with experts explore the area’s wildlife and plant life, as well as the district’s cultural history. Check the dates for these excursions in advance.

Forests cover 26 percent of the Duchy of Lauenburg district, which also contains 48 lakes. The district is also home to the Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest contiguous forest.

Other cultural and historical points of interest in the Duchy of Lauenburg can be found in Ratzeburg and Lauenburg/Elbe. The District Museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg in Ratzeburg presents exhibits on the history of the Dukes of Lauenburg and the inner German border. In Lauenburg/Elbe, the interactive, three-story “Man-Model-Machine” exhibition at the Elbe Shipping Museum is devoted to shipping. Visitors can take an active part at the exhibition’s models and experiment stations.

The Duchy of Lauenburg’s cultural program also includes the Kultursommer am Kanal (Summer of Culture on the Canal). This four-week cultural festival takes place every summer. Check the dates in advance for your travel period.
